To the enchanting rhythm of the Royal Enfield's single-cylinder engine, we set off to conquer the high passes of the Atlas, defying the aridity of the Sahara and uncovering the endless Berber villages scattered across the lush valleys. This Morocco motorcycle tour is a one-week getaway that takes us into total immersion, reigniting our desire to explore the Central High Atlas of Morocco.

Arrival in Marrakech

You are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. This first day is your chance to dive into the bustle of Marrakech, the starting point of your Africa motorcycle tour. A former imperial city and the cultural heart of Morocco, it is also the gateway to the high peaks of the Atlas. Explore its fascinating architectural heritage, wander through the lively alleys of the medina and savour your first local specialities. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in the city centre.

Our adventure into the Berber lands of the High Atlas begins. After an hour and a half on the road we leave the plain and climb the first slopes of this massive mountain range. In the afternoon, we put ourselves and the bikes to the test on several sections of track and reach the Ouzoud Waterfalls, the highest in the kingdom. In the late afternoon light, so perfect in Morocco, we end this first stage at the Bin El Ouidane reservoir.

We head deep into the heart of the Atlas and gain altitude: we will not drop below 2,000 metres again until tomorrow afternoon. The colossal rock of the Imsfrane Cathedral followed by the Asif Melloul gorges, or a quiet track used only by local farmers? Your guide is spoilt for choice in this corner of the mountains. Either way, both routes take you into the most authentic side of the Atlas.

A morning loop to the north-east to discover the natural lakes of Tislit and Isli. We then continue due south towards the Dadès valley, through mountains that never stop surprising us, both in their geology and their forests. Next comes the deep canyon that leads into the Dadès Gorges themselves. Even in the height of summer, this crossing is refreshingly cool.

We ride down the Dadès valley as it opens out. A stretch of track then confirms that we are on the southern slopes of the High Atlas: ochres and reds share the landscape, where clumps of oleander appear when you least expect them. After lunch, we climb the highest pass of the trip (3,005 metres) to reach the green Tabant valley, known as the Happy Valley. A day in the heart of Moroccan landscapes that never cease to amaze.

Tabant - Marrakech
This last riding day is just as wonderful and varied, through a string of charming Berber villages set on land where red and green recall the colours of the national flag. One last mountain pass at 2,200 metres, superb, before we drop down to the plain, where the heat may return as we approach the city. Overnight in a comfortable hotel and an evening in the old town to say goodbye to vibrant Marrakech.

This raid is reserved for experienced riders. It includes long stages far from first aid. First-line assistance to reach the nearest medical centre is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are very rare. Unreliable phone networks can occasionally make it difficult to reach the emergency services. As on any mountain route, the condition of the roads and the difficulty of the ride depend on the weather during and before the trip.
