Africa

Almost all year round, by following each country’s dry season:

• from September to March, South Africa, in the southern spring and summer;
• from November to March, southern Morocco (Agadir, the Anti-Atlas);
• in January and February, Rwanda and Tanzania;
• in spring and autumn, the Moroccan Atlas, Tunisia and Madagascar (April and May, August to October);
• from June to September, Rwanda and Tanzania, where the dry season lasts into October.

Morocco. Three of its tours are rated Accessible and stay mostly on tarmac: The Wonders of the Atlas Mountains, The Gateway to the Desert and The Argan Tree Route. Tunisia and Rwanda, rated Intermediate, add rolling tracks, with some sand in Tunisia. Madagascar, also Intermediate, calls for experience on badly broken roads. Tanzania and South Africa, rated Sustained, are for riders already at ease on tracks.

In Morocco first: The Wonders of the Atlas Mountains, The Gateway to the Desert and The Argan Tree Route are among our easiest tours for two, with very little off-road. In Tunisia, Rwanda and South Africa, it works if your pillion is happy on tracks. In Madagascar, the rider needs two-up experience, and in Tanzania you should already have ridden off-road together. We advise against it on the Berber Raid and From the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Dunes.

From £1,790 (€1,990) to £3,990 (€4,490) per rider, depending on the destination and the length:

• Morocco: £1,790 (€1,990) or £2,190 (€2,490), for 7 or 8 days;
• Tunisia: £1,890 (€2,090), for 7 days;
• Rwanda, South Africa and Madagascar: £3,590 (€3,990), for 9, 10 and 11 days;
• Tanzania: £3,990 (€4,490), for 10 days.

Mostly in East Africa. In Tanzania, An Adventure Tour across Maasai Lands includes a full day’s 4×4 safari in Tarangire National Park. In Rwanda, The Land of a Thousand Hills includes a safari in Akagera National Park, and meeting the mountain gorillas is an option. In Madagascar, entry to the Ranomafana, Anja and Isalo parks, home of the lemurs, is included. In South Africa, the itinerary features a jeep outing in a reserve near Montagu.
