See all reviewsFew islands pack so much into so few miles. Our Sri Lanka motorcycle tour, On the Roads of Ceylon, is a 12-day loop of about 845 miles from Negombo: fishing villages and lagoons on the west coast, the Lion Rock of Sigiriya at dawn, the bay of Trincomalee, the tea plantations of the highlands, an elephant safari in Udawalawe and the Dutch fort of Galle to finish.
You ride a Royal Enfield Classic 350, mostly on small paved roads with a few easy tracks, with an English-speaking tour leader, a mechanic and a support vehicle for your luggage. It is one of the best introductions to riding in Asia.
From Negombo, small coastal roads lead north to the Kalpitiya peninsula, among coconut groves, shrimp farms and fishing villages. Inland, the cultural triangle opens up: the ancient capital of Yapahuwa, the climb up Sigiriya’s Lion Rock at sunrise and the cave temples of Dambulla. A ribbon of tarmac then runs east to the great natural harbour of Trincomalee.
The second week climbs into the highlands: the wild Knuckles range, the tea plantations around Nuwara Eliya at almost 2,000 metres and the winding roads to Ella. On the way down, you stop at the Diyaluma Falls and the rock-carved Buddhas of Buduruwagala, go on safari in Udawalawe National Park and end on the south coast, inside the ramparts of Galle.
Our departures run from December to March, the dry season on the west and south coasts and in the highlands: sunny days, around 30°C on the coast and much cooler mornings in the tea country. It is the perfect winter escape when Europe is cold and grey.
Sri Lanka drives on the left, as in the UK and Ireland. About 85% of the route is on tarmac, with easy tracks that beginners can handle, and the mountain roads of the highlands are a real treat. Traffic can be dense around the towns, so stay alert.
You ride a Royal Enfield Classic 350, comfortable and easy to handle. Couples are welcome, and there is room in the support vehicle if a passenger wants a break. We obtain your Sri Lankan driving permit for you.
Sri Lanka is as much about stops as about riding: Buddhist cave temples, tea estates where you learn how your cup is made, wild elephants, crocodiles and water buffalo in Udawalawe, the old Dutch town of Galle and its sunsets over the Indian Ocean. Rice and curry, hoppers and fresh fruit make every meal a discovery.
