Indonesia stretches across more than 17,000 islands, and two of them are enough for an unforgettable ride. Our Indonesia motorcycle tour, From Bali to Java on the Volcanoes Trail, is a 12-day loop of about 845 miles (1,360 km) from Ubud: the rice terraces and temples of Bali, the ferry to Java, the sunrise on the Ijen crater, the sand sea of Mount Bromo, the wild south coast and its nesting turtles, then back to Bali by Menjangan Island and the volcano of Batur.

You ride a Royal Enfield on small, mostly paved roads, with an English-speaking tour leader, a mechanic and a support vehicle for your luggage, in a group of 10 motorcycles at most.

The tour starts in Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, and heads west through villages and rice fields to the north coast and the ferry at Gilimanuk. On Java, you climb on foot to the rim of the Ijen crater at dawn, then ride on to Cemoro Lawang to watch the sunrise over Bromo, Tengger and Semeru before crossing the volcanic sand caldera on your motorcycle.

Small roads then lead along the south coast to Sukamade, in Meru Betiri National Park, where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs at night. Back on Bali, a rest day in Pemuteran lets you snorkel or dive off Menjangan Island, before the ride to Amed and the back roads of central Bali, below Mount Batur, to Ubud.

Our departures run during the dry season, from May to September, with sunny days, around 30°C on the coast and cool mornings on the volcanoes: bring a warm layer for the Ijen and Bromo sunrises. The rainy season, from November to March, is avoided.

Indonesia drives on the left, as in the UK and Ireland. The roads are mostly small and paved, with a few easy tracks and the crossing of the Bromo caldera on volcanic sand. Days start early and traffic can be heavy around the towns of Java, so you should ride regularly; no off-road experience is needed.

You ride a Royal Enfield Classic 350 or Bullet 500 from our mixed fleet. Passengers are welcome, ideally couples who already have some experience riding two-up.

Some of the best moments of the tour happen off the bike: the walk up to the Ijen crater and its acid lake, the turtles of Sukamade, the coral reefs of Menjangan, the monkey forest of Sangeh, the market of Amlapura and the wood carvers of Pakudui. In Ubud, evenings are made for Balinese dance performances and the art galleries of the old town.

From Bali to Java on the Volcanoes Trail lasts 12 days, including 9 days of riding, and costs £3,490 (€3,790) per rider and £2,890 (€3,190) per passenger.

A registration fee of £31 (€35) applies on your first trip with us.

It is a loop from Bali: Ubud, the ferry to Java, the Ijen crater, Mount Bromo, the south coast of Java and Sukamade, then back to Bali via Pemuteran, Menjangan Island and Amed.

You need a motorcycle licence and regular riding practice; the pace is fairly brisk, with early starts and busy traffic in the towns. Passengers are welcome, ideally couples who already have some experience riding two-up.
