Djerba Island Stage 1/7 25-minute transfer

Welcome to Djerba for this Africa motorcycle tour! You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Houmt Souk, the island's historic town. Once settled in our fondouk, an ancestral building that once housed merchants and travellers, you are free to explore the historic streets of the souk, with its colourful stalls selling fabrics, objects and spices. Stroll through the unique architectural atmosphere of its whitewashed buildings and the ubiquitous bougainvillea in bloom. Enjoy the island's legendary laid-back atmosphere with a coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice in the shade of the tamarind trees. Overnight stay in a heritage hotel (standard).
Djerba - Tataouine Stage 2/7 146 miles (235 km), including 7 miles (12 km) of tracks

Early departure to pick up the motorcycles about 9 miles (15 km) from Houmt Souk. After leaving the island and reaching the mainland via the only road link (the old Roman road), we quickly head for the mountainous Dahar region. By late morning we reach its arid relief and valleys, where every drop of water counts. Lunch in the shade of palm trees in a mountain oasis. In the afternoon, we enter the land of the ksour and fortified villages, built long ago by semi-nomadic peoples to protect and store their harvests and other precious goods. At the end of the day, we reach our guesthouse north of Tataouine. Night in a standard heritage hotel.

Tataouine - Ksar Ghilane
We set off for the southernmost point of the trip, through the town of Tataouine, made famous by the Star Wars saga, to visit one of the most interesting ksour, at Ouled Soltane. We ride all morning through the Dahar hills to the citadel village of Chenini for lunch. In the afternoon, we head for the Tunisian Sahara and its famous oasis, Ksar Ghilane. The bends become rare, the first dunes appear and we enter another world. You can swim in the oasis spring or ride a quad bike in the dunes. Night in a standard hotel, in Bedouin-style tents.
Ksar Ghilane - Douz Stage 4/7 99 miles (160 km), including 16 miles (25 km) of tracks
Ksar Ghilane - Douz
To get from the oasis to Douz, we ride along the edge of the desert on a road regularly invaded by sandbanks, or by herds of dromedaries. Lunch in the centre of Douz, then in the afternoon we ride a loop through the date palm groves, the region's main resource, to the southern shore of Chott El Jerid, the vast depression of an invisible salt lake. The shade and calm of the palm groves are a blessing in this harsh land. Night in a standard hotel. 99 miles (160 km), plus an optional 47 miles (75 km).
Douz - Matmata Stage 5/7 155 miles (250 km)
Douz - Matmata
After riding through more islands of palm groves on the eastern edge of Chott El Jerid, we cross a vast desert area before reaching the northern part of the Dahar range after lunch. We climb back into the hills via Old Zraoua, another fascinating citadel village. Finally, we approach Matmata, known for its troglodyte dwellings dug into the ground and its hint of Cappadocia. We ride through this stunning, timeless landscape in the afternoon before reaching our troglodyte guesthouse. Night in a charming standard hotel.
Matmata - Djerba Stage 6/7 115 miles (185 km)
Matmata - Djerba
We spend the whole morning in the landscapes of the northern Dahar, where crops and greenery gradually reappear. Traditional lunch on the mountainside, in an old Berber village built of dry stone, before riding down to the plain towards the coast. We board the ferry back to the island of Djerba. We drop off the motorcycles in the late afternoon and return to Houmt Souk. Dinner at the fondouk to share the best moments of the ride. Night in a standard hotel.

Your Tunisian adventure has come to an end. It's time to do some last-minute shopping in Houmt Souk. Shuttle to Djerba International Airport.

This ride includes a few long stages far from immediate medical help. Primary assistance to reach the nearest medical centre is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are very rare. Unstable telephone networks can occasionally make it difficult to contact the emergency services. As with any adventure itinerary, the difficulty of the route depends on the weather conditions, both during and before the trip.
