Welcome to Djerba for this Africa motorcycle tour! You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Houmt Souk, the island's historic town. Once settled in our fondouk, an ancestral building that once housed merchants and travellers, you are free to explore the historic streets of the souk, with its colourful stalls selling fabrics, objects and spices. Stroll through the unique architectural atmosphere of its whitewashed buildings and the ubiquitous bougainvillea in bloom. Enjoy the island's legendary laid-back atmosphere with a coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice in the shade of the tamarind trees. Overnight stay in a heritage hotel (standard).
Djerba - Tataouine Stage 2/7 146 miles (235 km)

Early departure to meet the motorcycles about 9 miles (15 km) from Houmt Souk. After leaving the island and reaching the mainland via the only road link (the old Roman road), we quickly head towards the mountainous Dahar region. At the end of the morning, we reach its arid landscapes and valleys where every drop of water counts. Lunch in the shade of palm trees in a mountain oasis. In the second part of the day, we enter the land of the Ksour and fortified villages, built in the past by semi-nomadic populations to protect and store crops and other precious goods. At the end of the day, we reach our accommodation north of Tataouine. Night in a heritage hotel (standard).
Tataouine - Ksar Ghilane Stage 3/7 121 miles (195 km)

We set off for the southernmost point of the trip, passing through the town of Tataouine, made famous by the Star Wars saga, to see one of the most interesting ksour in Ouled Soltane. We continue all morning through the Dahar mountains to the fortified village of Chenini for lunch. In the afternoon, we ride towards the Tunisian Sahara and its well-known oasis, Ksar Ghilane. The bends become fewer and fewer, the first dunes appear, and we enter a different world. There is the option of swimming in the oasis spring or quad biking in the dunes. Night in a standard hotel, in Bedouin-style tents.
Ksar Ghilane - Douz Stage 4/7 99 miles (160 km)
Ksar Ghilane - Douz
To get from the oasis to Douz, we ride along the edge of the desert, on a road where sandbanks regularly appear. Or herds of camels. Lunch in the centre of Douz, then in the afternoon we ride a loop through the date palm groves, the region's main economic resource, to the southern edge of Chott El Jerid, the vast depression of an invisible salt lake. The shade and calm of the palm groves are a blessing in these harsh lands. Night in a standard hotel. 99 miles (160 km), plus an optional 47 miles (75 km).
Douz - Matmata Stage 5/7 155 miles (250 km)
Douz - Matmata
After riding through other palm groves on the eastern edge of Chott El Jerid, we cross a vast desert area before reaching the northern part of the Dahar mountain range after lunch. We enter the mountains again via Ancienne Zraoua, another fascinating fortified village. Finally, we approach Matmata, known for its cave dwellings dug into the ground and its resemblance to Cappadocia. We ride through this stunning, timeless landscape during the second half of the day before reaching our cave dwelling. Overnight stay in a charming standard hotel.
Matmata - Djerba Stage 6/7 115 miles (185 km)

We make the most of this morning devoted to the landscapes of northern Dahar, where crops and greenery are gradually reappearing. We enjoy a traditional lunch on the mountainside, in an old Berber village built of dry stone, before descending to the plain towards the coast. We board the ferry to return to the island of Djerba. We drop off our motorbikes at the end of the afternoon and return to Houmt Souk. Dinner at the fondouk to discuss the highlights of this motorbike trip. Night in a standard hotel.

This ride includes a few long stages far from medical help. First assistance to reach the nearest medical centre is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are very rare. Unstable telephone networks can occasionally make it difficult to contact the emergency services. As on any adventure itinerary, the difficulty of the route depends on the weather conditions, both during and before the trip.

Chasing the Nomad Caravans: your questions

How is this tour different from the Girls Ride and your Morocco tours?

This is our tour of southern Tunisia: 7 days with 5 days of riding, on a loop from Djerba via Tataouine and the ksour road, the Ksar Ghilane oasis on the edge of the Sahara, Douz, the Chott el Jerid salt lake and Matmata. The Girls Ride follows the same route, women only, with a female tour leader and on its own dates. In Morocco, The Wonders of the Atlas Mountains stays almost entirely on tarmac, and From the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Dunes has more tracks and sand.

What riding level do I need, and is there any off-road?

The tour is rated Intermediate: you need to ride regularly and be comfortable with a few stretches off tarmac. Several stages include tracks, with sand in places, notably around Ksar Ghilane and on the road to Douz. Some stages are far from medical help: the support vehicle follows the group.

How far do we ride each day?

About 620 miles (1,000 km) over 5 riding days, from 100 to 155 miles (160 to 250 km) a day. Tracks and sand take time: expect a full day in the saddle, with stops in the ksour, the oases and the palm groves.

Which motorcycle will I ride, and will it suit my height?

A Royal Enfield Himalayan 411, maintained by our mechanic, who follows the group with the spare parts. The seat height is 800 mm, and a lowered version at 790 mm exists: if your height makes you hesitate, talk to your travel advisor before booking.

Can I bring a pillion?

Yes. The luggage travels in the support vehicle, and your pillion must be happy with a few stretches of track and sand. The tour costs £1,890 (€2,090) per rider and £1,490 (€1,740) per pillion.

Who leads the group, and how many of us are there?

An English-speaking motorcycle tour leader and a mechanic, with a driver at the wheel of the support vehicle, which carries your luggage and the spare parts. The group is limited to 10 motorcycles (12 participants with pillions).

How much does it cost, and what should I budget for on top?

£1,890 (€2,090) per rider and £1,490 (€1,740) per pillion. The price includes the motorcycle, fuel, the team, accommodation, full board from breakfast on day 2 to breakfast on day 7 and transfers from Djerba airport. You pay for your flights, dinner on day 1, drinks, entrance fees, tips and a €600 deposit per motorcycle.

Is Tunisia safe for a motorcycle tour?

The tour stays in the south of the country, between Djerba, the Dahar hills and the edge of the Sahara, and the group rides with a tour leader, a mechanic and a support vehicle. Read the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) travel advice for Tunisia before booking, and ask your travel advisor any questions.

How do I get to the start, and what documents do I need?

The tour starts and ends in Djerba, and you book your own flights. Our team meets you at the airport on day 1, 25 minutes from your hotel in Houmt Souk, and takes you back on day 7. UK and EU citizens need no visa for a stay of under 90 days: bring a passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival and your full driving licence with motorcycle entitlement (required documents). To arrive earlier or stay on, ask your travel advisor about the options.

When does the tour run, and where do we stay?

Departures run in spring and autumn, from March to May and from September to November; open dates are shown on this page. Days are hot and mornings and evenings cool: bring a warm layer and rain gear. You stay in simple, characterful places, including a fondouk (an old caravanserai), a ksar and a troglodyte guesthouse, with one night with shared bathrooms. Bring a soft bag.
