Bienvenido a Argentina ! This is where your South America motorbike tour.begins. At the foot of the Andes Mountains, Salta will be the starting point for our motorcycle adventure.
Salta - Iruya Stage 2/13 180 miles including 34 miles of off road
Salta - Iruya
First day riding our Royal Enfield Himalayan 450s. We leave Salta on a magnificent winding road heading north. Argentina is already revealing one of its most beautiful sites: the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a multicoloured mountain range listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We end up on a track lost deep in the mountains... Welcome to the end of the world! Welcome to Iruya!

If we get up at dawn, we may be lucky enough to see condors rising from their nests above the canyon. Today's stage takes us towards the Bolivian border to reach the ‘Valle de la Luna’ (Moon Valley). A regional nature park where, as its name suggests, we explore a lunar landscape at an altitude of 3,800 metres and spend the night in a tiny village forgotten by the world...

From Cusi Cusi, we take Route 40 for a few dozen kilometres of track. We organise a magnificent picnic at an altitude of 4,200 metres with a view of a secret lagoon... Then we spend the night in the charming village of Humahuaca with its cobbled streets and colonial houses.

We set off for the Mirador del Hornocal and after an hour's drive along a dirt track, we arrive at the viewpoint at an altitude of 4,350 metres, which offers us a breathtaking view! Known by the locals as the ‘mountain of 14 colours’, we have a front-row seat for this panorama where the sun plays with the colours.

A magnificent day of endless twists and turns! We descend from an altitude of 4,000 metres to 1,000 metres down the Quebrada del Toro, then climb back up to 3,700 metres in a few hours via the Cuesta del Obispo... The majestic mountains and paved roads are even more impressive today!

A day off to discover the charming Andean village of Cachi, picturesque and authentic, overlooking the valley from an altitude of 2,500 metres. It's nice to stroll in the shade of the central square... A visit to the museum offers an immersion into the pre-Inca, Inca and Spanish eras. The local vineyards are also open to visitors. Lunch is at your leisure today.

Back on the 40! From track to track, we arrive at the hidden Brealito lagoon, located at an altitude of 2,700 metres. A gem of the north-west, a lunar landscape of rock formations sculpted by earthquakes, erosion and time. These rock spires pointing towards the sky open onto an exceptional track, a real treat for us and our motorbikes.
Cafayate - Andalgalá Stage 10/13 143 miles including 72 miles of off road

We leave Route 40 to head to the ruins of Quilmes, a sacred site covering 30 hectares where you can see the remains of a forgotten civilisation. We pass by the Capillitas mine, where deposits of a pink mineral are found, a semi-precious stone that is the sacred symbol of local artisans. This is followed by 45 km of twists and turns on a wild track that winds through the mountains to reach Andalgala.

Andalgalá - Tafí del valle
A long, beautiful climb up the Chilca trail, along the side of a cliff, offers impressive views of the impenetrable Catamarca desert. After crossing the Aconquija National Park via a few kilometres of winding trails, a completely different landscape opens up before us: we are now in the green mountains of Tafi Del Valle. A day of motorcycling with thousands of hairpin bends!

On our last day of motorcycling, we set off again for Cafayate, crossing the Quebrada de Las Conchas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, travelling around 100 kilometres through a huge canyon formed by the oceans millions of years ago.

  • Petrol, parking, any tolls.

  • Third-party motorcycle insurance.

  • Compulsory insurance: insurance covering medical expenses on site. Repatriation assistance, which covers you in the event of accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles (large engine capacity).

  • Legal insurance and cancellation insurance are strongly recommended.

  • International driving licence.

This raid is reserved for experienced pilots. It includes long stages at high altitude (passes > 4500 m) far from first aid. Primary assistance to reach the nearest medical center is mainly provided by our assistance vehicle, means such as helicopters or ambulances being very rare. Limited telephone networks and a ban on satellite phones can make contacting emergency services difficult. As with any mountain itinerary, the quality of the roads and the difficulty of the route depend on the weather conditions during and before the trip.
