Hello! Welcome to Morocco! Your driver will be waiting for you at 2 p.m. at Marrakesh airport to take you to Aït Benhaddou (a private transfer lasting 4 hours). Once settled in your Riad, head to the village's Ksar, an 11th-century site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take the time to explore and lose yourself there; every viewpoint is like a postcard. In the evening, meet with the group for a briefing on the adventure that lies ahead. Ait Benhaddou - Foum Zguid Stage 2/8 112 miles (180 km)
Ait Benhaddou - Foum Zguid
Today is the first day of our Moroccan adventure. We set off through Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, and head due south. We stop briefly in the authentic palm grove of Fint to see how this farming oasis works. We then string together bend after bend through an exceptional mineral landscape, where villages form oases in the hollows of the desert mountains. Travellers are rare on these roads, and we feel privileged to cross the Atlas almost alone.
Foum Zguid - Zagora Stage 3/8 121 miles (195 km)
Foum Zguid - Zagora
Today we head for Zagora. We take the track early in the morning through a valley that seems abandoned, but little by little we pass through villages where scenes of everyday life unfold before us. We stop for an improvised picnic, the perfect moment to admire the landscape and stretch our legs. The ride into Zagora is magnificent, and we then cross the Drâa river to reach our riad.

Early in the morning, we visit the Zagora palm grove and the Jewish kasbah, where some jewellers still work. We then set off on a short ride to the Erg Lihoudi dunes, which we reach at the end of the day. An authentic camp and dinner await us. It is time to kick off your shoes, wander through the dunes and take in the calm and the vastness of the place. Welcome to the Sahara.
M’Hammid - N’Kob Stage 5/8 124 miles (200 km)
M’Hammid - N’Kob
We drink one last tea with our feet in the sand before getting back on the road. We visit Tamegroute and its Koranic library, where thousand-year-old manuscripts are kept. Ahmed also shows us around the village to meet the local potters, whose craft is known throughout Morocco. We then ride on through the Drâa valley, crossing from one bank to the other. Once in N'Kob, we take a stroll around this typical town of the region, home to more than 40 kasbahs.
N'Kob - Dadès Valley Stage 6/8 143 miles (230 km)
N'Kob - Dadès Valley
A long and beautiful ride today. We leave N’Kob and quickly climb to a higher altitude in the Jbel Saghro massif and cross Tizi n’Tazazert mountain pass at almost 2,300 m altitude. The views are incredible and don’t stop until we make our way down to the Dades Gorge. We enjoy all the shades of red in this emblematic valley and arrive at our favourite hostel.

Dades - Aït Benhaddou
Our last stage on the slopes of the High Atlas, on fine tracks all the way to Skoura. After a week on our Royal Enfields, these tracks feel within reach and we ride them with confidence. It is hard to believe our eyes: one landscape follows another in shades of red and yellow, a triumphant end to the adventure.

This raid is reserved for experienced riders. It includes long stages far from first aid. Primary assistance to reach the nearest medical centre is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are very rare. Unstable phone networks can occasionally make it difficult to contact the emergency services. As on any mountain itinerary, road quality and the difficulty of the route depend on the weather during and before the trip.

From the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Dunes: your questions

How is this tour different from your other Morocco tours?

It is our Morocco tour that goes all the way to the desert: 8 days with 6 days of riding, on a loop from Aït Ben Haddou via Ouarzazate, Foum Zguid, Zagora, the Erg Lihoudi dunes, the Jebel Saghro and the Dadès Valley, with about a quarter of the riding time on tracks. The Berber Raid stays in the High Atlas, with tracks every day. If you have never ridden off tarmac, The Wonders of the Atlas Mountains, The Gateway to the Desert and The Argan Tree Route are almost entirely on tarmac.

What riding level do I need, and is there much off-road?

The tour is rated Intermediate and is for experienced riders: about a quarter of the riding time is on rideable tracks, with a few technical sections and some sand. You should already have ridden off tarmac, for example on a one-day off-road training course. Some stages are far from medical help: the support vehicle follows the group.

How far do we ride each day?

About 685 miles (1,100 km) over 6 riding days, from 50 to 143 miles (80 to 230 km) a day. The stage to the M’Hamid dunes is short; the longest crosses the Jebel Saghro by the Tizi n’Tazazert pass, at nearly 2,300 metres, before dropping down to the Dadès.

Which motorcycle will I ride, and will it suit my height?

A Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, built for tracks and serviced by our mechanic, who follows the group with the spare parts. A lowered seat is available for this motorcycle: if your height makes you hesitate, talk to your travel advisor before booking.

Can I bring a pillion?

We advise against it: the track and sand sections are hard work two-up, and this tour is not designed for pillions. If you really want to ride two-up, talk to your travel advisor first. To discover Morocco as a couple, The Wonders of the Atlas Mountains is made for it.

Who leads the group, and how many of us are there?

An English-speaking motorcycle tour leader, a mechanic and the driver of the support vehicle, which carries your luggage and the spare parts. The group is limited to 10 motorcycles.

How much does it cost, and what should I budget for on top?

£2,190 (€2,490) per rider. The price includes the motorcycle, fuel, the team, accommodation, full board from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 8 and transfers between Marrakech airport and Aït Ben Haddou. You pay for your flights, drinks, tips, entrance fees for visits and a €600 deposit per motorcycle.

How do I get to the start?

The tour starts and ends in Aït Ben Haddou, about 4 hours by road from Marrakech, and you book your own flights. Land at Marrakech airport by midday on day 1 at the latest: a shared shuttle leaves at 2pm. On day 8 the return transfer also takes about 4 hours, so book a flight after 3pm. To arrive earlier or stay on, ask your travel advisor about the options.

When does the tour run, and what is the weather like?

The season runs from March to May and from September to November; the next published departures are in late April and May, then in late October and November, and other dates are possible on request through your travel advisor. Days are warm but mornings and evenings are cold, in the desert as in the mountains: bring a warm layer and rain gear.

Where do we stay, and what is the night in the desert like?

In standard and comfort hotels and riads, with one night in a camp at the foot of the Erg Lihoudi dunes: a proper bed with sheets and a duvet, but basic comfort, often without a shower. The support vehicle carries your luggage: bring a soft bag rather than a hard suitcase.
