Hola, Arequipa! Set at 2,300 m (7,546 ft), this colonial city is the first stop on this South America motorcycle tour. We meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel by private vehicle. Take time to stroll through the streets of the "White City" and let its architecture and warm atmosphere win you over.

This is the big day! On our Royal Enfields, we start on a road that quickly takes us up into vicuña country, and here we are, well and truly in the heart of the Andean highlands. We cross the highest pass of the tour, the Abra Patapampa, at 4,910 m (16,109 ft).

We are spoilt for choice today, with several possible routes to our destination. Good tarmac on one section, small roads broken up by tracks on another: each alternative has its own points of interest. Trust your guide to choose the one best suited to the group.

We rise early and set off on a superb winding dual carriageway, still at around 4,000 m (13,123 ft), then take a beautiful track along the mountainside, past a few alpaca farms and a string of mountain lakes. Here again, the alternative routes are just as exciting: your guide will brief you and make the choice, a winning one either way.

Today is our first rest day, and you have already earned it after three big riding days. We recommend an early start for a morning walk through Cusco: lose yourself in the little streets of the San Blas district, but don't miss the Temple of the Sun or the beautiful Plaza de Armas.

We set off this morning for a full day, heading for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Ruins, farming haciendas, views over the high mountains: this region has so much to offer, including the Maras salt pans and the extraordinary, mysterious Inca agricultural site of Moray.

Today the motorcycles get a rest. From Ollantaytambo we take the train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. What imagination and toil it must have taken to build a city in such a place! Once at the top, the crowds thin out and it is a pleasure to lose yourself among the ruins, in a fantastic natural setting.

A big stage today, but an easy one, on good, beautiful tarmac roads almost all the way. We leave the Andean heights for 24 hours. We follow the Urubamba river for a while before joining the Interoceánica, a recent highway that runs all the way to Brazil and the Atlantic coast and drops us into the Amazon basin with a descent of... 4,000 metres (13,123 ft)!

After a peaceful night in the Amazon basin, lulled by the symphony of countless night insects, we head back up to the Andean highlands, with another fine climb of 4,000 metres (13,123 ft). An easy, fast-flowing stage, once again on magnificent roads.

Bristling with small mountain ranges, fine peaks and snowy ridges, the endless grasslands of the pampa carry us towards the shores of the largest lake in South America, Titicaca. When we finally set our wheels on its western shore, it is not a lake but a true inland sea that bursts into deep, intense blue!

A second rest day, well earned once again. Walk along the shores of Lake Titicaca, or take a trip to the surrounding islands, including the most authentic of them, Taquile Island.

The grand finale: our last day is probably the biggest stage of the trip, as we head back to Arequipa, our starting point. Long main roads keep up a good average speed, with a few off-road detours. Arrival in Arequipa and a well-earned rest. Night at the hotel.

  • Legal assistance and cancellation insurance (strongly recommended).

This adventure tour is reserved for experienced riders. It includes long stages at high altitude (passes above 4,500 m / 14,764 ft), far from medical help. First aid to reach the nearest medical centre is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are very rare. Limited phone networks and the ban on satellite phones can make contacting the emergency services difficult. As on any mountain route, road quality and difficulty depend on the weather, both during and before the trip.
