Discover our motorbike tours in Laos

Laos is one of the few countries in South-East Asia still spared by mass tourism: rice terraces on rolling hills, stilt villages in the jungle, Buddhist temples and life set to the rhythm of the Mekong. Our Laos motorcycle tour, Beyond the Mekong, is a 12-day loop of about 1,090 miles from Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand.

You cross the Mekong on the Friendship Bridge, ride the mountain roads of the north to Luang Namtha and Nong Khiaw, spend two nights in the royal city of Luang Prabang and stay at the elephant conservation centre of Sayaboury, before a final day of tracks back to Thailand. You ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, with an English-speaking tour leader, a mechanic and a support vehicle.

From Chiang Mai, the mountain roads of northern Thailand lead to Chiang Khong and the Mekong. Once over the Friendship Bridge, you change sides of the road and ride north to Luang Namtha, then east to Nong Khiaw and its karst cliffs above the Nam Ou river. Luang Prabang, the former royal capital listed by UNESCO, gives you a day off the bike among its temples, with the Kuang Si waterfalls nearby.

The way back crosses the Mekong again to Sayaboury and its elephant conservation centre, then heads into the wilderness to Pakbeng. The last day in Laos is the most adventurous of the tour, on mountain tracks back to Chiang Khong, before the ride along the Thai border to Chiang Kham, Phayao and Chiang Mai.

This tour is more demanding than it looks. Roads in Laos are often damaged, sometimes busy, and two days at the end run on tracks that can be tough after rain. You should ride regularly, be in good shape and have some off-road experience. A passenger is only possible if you both already have off-road experience.

You ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, at ease on broken roads and tracks. For a more relaxed ride on paved mountain roads, our Northern Thailand motorcycle tours are a better fit.

Luang Prabang: with its harmonious blend of traditional Lao architecture and colonial mansions, the former royal capital is one of the most beautiful towns in Asia. Its temples and the morning alms round of the monks are unforgettable.

The Mekong: the river runs for almost 2,000 km through Laos. Source of water for the rice fields, of fish and the country’s oldest highway, it sets the rhythm of Lao life, and you cross it several times on the tour.

The elephants of Sayaboury: at the Elephant Conservation Centre, a Franco-Lao team works to protect the Asian elephant. The “land of a million elephants” now has only a few hundred left in the wild.

Our departures run from October to April, in the dry, cooler season. Mornings can be cold in the northern mountains, so pack a warm layer. From May to October, the monsoon brings heavy rain and oppressive heat.

If your departure falls in April, you may be in time for Pi Mai, the Lao New Year: parades, dances and friendly water fights in every village.
