Albania is one of the least travelled countries in Europe: mountain roads with hardly any traffic, stone villages, Ottoman towns and quiet lakes on the borders with Greece and North Macedonia. Our Albania motorcycle tour starts in Thessaloniki and links northern Greece with the south and east of Albania, on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, with an English-speaking guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle.
The Secret Roads of a Different Europe: 7 days, 5 of them on the bike, about 650 miles, from £1,790 (€1,990) per rider.
From Thessaloniki you ride west through the hills of Greek Macedonia to Kastoria, a town built on a peninsula in Lake Orestiada. The next day you cross the border into Albania and ride down to Gjirokastër, the “Stone City”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site beneath its fortress.
The route then follows the Vjosa, one of the last wild rivers in Europe, to Berat, the “City of a Thousand Windows”, also listed by UNESCO. From there you head east through rural valleys to the Prespa lakes, where Albania, Greece and North Macedonia meet, for a night in a Greek village on the shore. The last day crosses the mountains of northern Greece back to Thessaloniki.
The tour is rated Intermediate. There is very little off-road, but the days are long: 140 to 155 miles on four of the five riding days, on small, winding and sometimes uneven roads. You should ride regularly and be comfortable with five to six hours a day in the saddle. It is not a first tour for a new or occasional rider: The Road of the Gods, in the Peloponnese, is rated Accessible.
Pillions are welcome, and the tour works well for couples. The group is limited to 10 motorcycles.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons to ride in Albania: mild temperatures, light traffic and none of the summer heat. Our departures are in May, late September and early October.
Albanian cooking mixes Mediterranean, Balkan and Ottoman influences: byrek, a filo pie filled with cheese, spinach or meat; tavë kosi, lamb baked with yoghurt and rice; fërgesë, a stew of peppers, tomatoes and cheese; and grilled qofte. Meals are included from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 7.
