Salta is located in a fertile valley at the foot of the eastern Andes and is the second largest city in north Argentina. Nicknamed “Salta la Linda” (Beautiful Salta), this Argentine city boasts the best preserved colonial architecture. Overnight stay at a hotel in the city centre.

Leaving Salta, the asphalt winds through the lush green mountain pass of the RN 9 before opening onto the mineral landscapes of the UNESCO-listed Quebrada de Humahuaca. Ochre and red hues dominate as the kilometers roll by. Stop in the picturesque villages of Purmamarca or Tilcara before reaching Humahuaca, an altiplano town perched at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,843 ft).

We continue our adventure toward the Andean high plateaus heading to Susques. The track climbs steadily to over 12,139 feet, leading through salt flats, desert landscapes, and vast wilderness. A spectacular stage that immerses us into the heart of the Argentine Puna before reaching the small village of Susques for the night.

Departure from Susques for a wild crossing along the dirt and gravel tracks (ripio) of the Puna. The route skirts the vast white expanse of the Salinas Grandes and winds through lunar landscapes above 11,483 feet, amid llamas and vicuñas. Arrival in San Antonio de los Cobres (12,303 ft), a legendary stop on Ruta 40 dominated by the Train to the Clouds Viaduct (Tren a las Nubes).

A magnificent day of endless curves! We descend from an altitude of 13,123 ft to 3,281 ft through the Quebrada del Toro, then climb back up to 12,139 ft in just a few hours via the Cuesta del Obispo... Today's majestic mountains and paved roads are sure to impress!

Spend the day exploring the charming Andean town, Cachi, perched at 2,500 m altitude and overlooking the Calchaquí Valley. History buffs mustn’t miss the Pío Pablo Díaz Archaeological Museum. There are also many local vineyards worth visiting. Those who prefer to rest can stroll to Plaza 9 de Julio.

Back on Route 40! Riding from track to track, we reach the hidden lagoon of Brealito at 8,858 feet above sea level. A true gem of the Northwest, this lunar landscape features rock formations sculpted by earthquakes, erosion, and time. These stone spires pointing skyward open onto an exceptional riding track—a real treat for us and our motorcycles.
Cafayate - Salta Étape 8/9 124 miles

Last riding day! We set off again towards Cafayate and cross the Quebrada de Las Conchas, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring about 62 miles of riding through a massive canyon formed by oceans millions of years ago! You will discover impressive rock formations and colors ranging from ochre and gold to green, red, and yellow. Arrival in Salta. Overnight stay at the hotel.

This tour is strictly reserved for experienced riders. It features long stages at high altitudes (passes exceeding 14,764 ft / 4,500 m) far removed from emergency medical services. Primary assistance to reach the nearest medical facility is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as resources like helicopters or ambulances are extremely scarce. Limited mobile coverage and local restrictions on satellite phones can make contacting emergency services difficult. As with any mountain route, road conditions and difficulty depend heavily on weather conditions prior to and during the trip.
