A loop from Salta through the most beautiful landscapes of north-west Argentina, on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: the colored mountains of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, the high plateaus of the Puna where vicuñas roam free, a ride across the Salinas Grandes salt flat, the legendary Route 40, the Andean village of Cachi, the Quebrada de las Flechas and the vineyards of Cafayate. Salta is located in a fertile valley at the foot of the eastern Andes and is the second largest city in north Argentina. Nicknamed “Salta la Linda” (Beautiful Salta), this Argentine city boasts the best preserved colonial architecture. Overnight stay at a hotel in the city center.
Salta - Humahuaca Stage 2/9 168 miles (including 37 miles off-road)

Leaving Salta, the asphalt winds through the lush green mountain pass of the RN 9 before opening onto the mineral landscapes of the UNESCO-listed Quebrada de Humahuaca. Ochre and red hues dominate as the miles roll by. Stop in the picturesque villages of Purmamarca or Tilcara before reaching Humahuaca, an altiplano town perched at about 9,800 feet.

We continue our adventure toward the Andean high plateaus heading to Susques. The track climbs steadily to over 12,139 feet, leading through salt flats, desert landscapes, and vast wilderness. A spectacular stage that immerses us into the heart of the Argentine Puna before reaching the small village of Susques for the night.
Susques - San Antonio de Los Cobres Stage 4/9 78 miles (including 75 miles off-road)
Susques - San Antonio de Los Cobres
Departure from Susques for a wild crossing along the dirt and gravel tracks (ripio) of the Puna. The route skirts the vast white expanse of the Salinas Grandes and winds through lunar landscapes above 11,483 feet, amid llamas and vicuñas. Arrival in San Antonio de los Cobres (12,303 ft), a legendary stop on Ruta 40 dominated by the Train to the Clouds Viaduct (Tren a las Nubes).

A magnificent day of endless curves! We descend from an altitude of 13,123 ft to 3,281 ft through the Quebrada del Toro, then climb back up to 12,139 ft in just a few hours via the Cuesta del Obispo... Today's majestic mountains and paved roads are sure to impress!
Cachi Stage 6/9

Spend the day exploring the charming Andean town, Cachi, perched at about 8,200 feet and overlooking the Calchaquí Valley. History buffs mustn’t miss the Pío Pablo Díaz Archaeological Museum. There are also many local vineyards worth visiting. Those who prefer to rest can stroll to Plaza 9 de Julio.

Back on Route 40! Riding from track to track, we reach the hidden lagoon of Brealito at 8,858 feet above sea level. A true gem of the Northwest, this lunar landscape features rock formations sculpted by earthquakes, erosion, and time. These stone spires pointing skyward open onto an exceptional riding track, a real treat for us and our motorcycles.
Cafayate - Salta Stage 8/9 124 miles

Last riding day! We set off again towards Cafayate and cross the Quebrada de Las Conchas, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring about 62 miles of riding through a massive canyon formed by oceans millions of years ago! You will discover impressive rock formations and colors ranging from ochre and gold to green, red, and yellow. Arrival in Salta. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may be able to spend a few hours in Salta enjoying the city center and museums. You’re transferred to the international airport.

  • A Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 motorcycle and spare parts.

  • Fuel, parking and any tolls.

  • Third-party motorcycle insurance.

  • Mandatory insurance: insurance covering local medical expenses and repatriation assistance covering large-displacement motorcycle accidents.

  • Legal protection insurance and cancellation insurance are strongly recommended.

  • International driving permit.

This adventure tour is reserved for experienced riders. About 40% of the distance is on tracks, mostly rolling but with long corrugated sections and sand; tracks are easier in September and October, and rougher in March and April, with fords. The stages are long and at high altitude, with passes above 14,700 feet. Passengers are welcome if they are comfortable spending full days on tracks, and can join the support vehicle at any time.

Much of the route is far from medical facilities: first assistance is provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are very rare, and mobile coverage is limited. As on any mountain route, road conditions depend on the weather, during and before the tour.
