Bali and Java are two very different islands linked by a short ferry crossing: the temples and rice terraces of Bali on one side, the volcanoes, jungles and wild coasts of eastern Java on the other. Our Indonesia motorcycle tour rides both on a Royal Enfield, with an English-speaking motorcycle guide, a local Indonesian guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle.

From Bali to Java on the Volcano Route is a 12-day loop from Bali, about 845 miles, from $4,550. Departures from May to September.

From Ubud, you ride small roads through Balinese villages to the north coast and take the ferry at Gilimanuk to Java. At dawn, you hike to the rim of the Ijen crater and its turquoise acid lake, then ride west to Cemoro Lawang, on the edge of the Bromo caldera, for sunrise over the volcanoes of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park and a crossing of the sea of volcanic sand.

The route then follows the wild south coast to Sukamade, reached by 4×4 through the jungle, where sea turtles come ashore at night. Back in Bali, you ride to Pemuteran and the reefs of Menjangan Island, the beaches of Amed, and return to Ubud.

This is a relaxed tour on small paved roads, with a pace that leaves time for temples, markets, hikes and swimming. You need a motorcycle license and regular riding practice. Traffic drives on the left in Indonesia, and your guide leads the way. Passengers are welcome.

The dry season, from May to September, is the best time to ride Bali and Java: sunny days, and cooler air in the mountains and around the volcanoes. Our departures run during that season.

Indonesia motorcycle tours: your questions

From Bali to Java on the Volcano Route costs from $4,550 per rider and $3,830 per passenger for 12 days. International flights are not included.

It is a loop from Bali: Ubud, the ferry to Java, the Ijen crater, Mount Bromo, the south coast of Java and Sukamade, then back to Bali via Pemuteran, Menjangan Island and Amed.

Yes, traffic drives on the left in Indonesia. The guide rides ahead of the group, the roads are mostly small and quiet, and most riders get used to it within the first day.
