Argentina & Chile: From Salta to Atacama

Chile motorcycle tours

Chile has two riding worlds, and our motorcycle tours cross the Andes from Argentina to reach both: the Atacama Desert in the north, with its salt flats, high passes and geysers, and the lakes and volcanoes of Patagonia in the south, with forests, hot springs and snow-capped cones. You ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, with an English-speaking guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle.

Choose Argentina & Chile: From Salta to Atacama (13 days, from $6,390), Volcanoes and Lakes of Patagonia (14 days, from $6,990), or the 46-day Transcontinental from Peru to Ushuaia.

From Salta to Atacama leaves Salta, in northwest Argentina, for the Quebrada de Humahuaca, Iruya and Purmamarca, then climbs over the Andes via Susques to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. From there, you ride the Rio Grande valley and up to the El Tatio geysers at dawn, before crossing back to Argentina through San Antonio de los Cobres, Cachi and the vineyards of Cafayate: about 1,520 miles in 13 days, with high passes above 14,700 feet.

Volcanoes and Lakes of Patagonia starts in Bariloche and crosses into Chile at Villa Pehuenia, among araucaria forests. In Chile, you ride past Curacautín and Pucón at the foot of the Villarrica volcano, the lakes around Licán Ray, the river port of Valdivia, Futrono and the Huilo Huilo forest reserve, before returning to Argentina via Villa Traful: about 1,400 miles in 14 days.

The Transcontinental is a 46-day expedition from Arequipa, in Peru, to Ushuaia. In Chile, it rides the lakes and volcanoes of the south and the Carretera Austral, one of the great wilderness roads of the continent. From $15,690.

The seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere. The Atacama tour runs in March and May, then from September to November, avoiding the heat of summer and the cold of winter at altitude. Patagonia is best in the southern summer: our departures run in December and January.

Chile motorcycle tours: your questions

From Salta to Atacama costs from $6,390 per rider for 13 days, Volcanoes and Lakes of Patagonia from $6,990 for 14 days, and the 46-day Transcontinental from $15,690. International flights are not included.

Our Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 fleet is based in Argentina, and the best way to see Chile by motorcycle is to cross the Andes: the Atacama from Salta, and Chilean Patagonia from Bariloche. Each tour spends several days in Chile.

We handle the paperwork for the motorcycles and guide you through the formalities at the Andes border posts. US citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay in Argentina or Chile.

For the Atacama, March and May, then September to November. For Patagonia, the southern summer: our departures run in December and January.

These are adventure tours, for experienced riders: long days, some rough gravel sections, and, in the Atacama, passes above 14,700 feet. Previous off-road experience is a real advantage.

Fly to Salta for the Atacama tour, or to Bariloche for Patagonia, usually with a connection in Buenos Aires. We meet you at the airport.
