On the Trail of the Last Nomads

In our documentary film “Iron Horse Nomad Trails,” Johann Rousselot rides a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 alone to scout our Kyrgyzstan motorcycle tour: high-plateau trails, passes above 10,000 ft, the yurts of Song Kol lake, and encounters with the last nomads of Central Asia. The first departures of this guided motorcycle tour from Osh are in 2027.

Kyrgyzstan motorcycle tours

Kyrgyzstan is one of the last great frontiers of adventure riding: high mountain dirt roads, alpine lakes, endless summer pastures and almost no traffic. Our Kyrgyzstan motorcycle tour, The Nomad Odyssey, is an 11-day loop of about 1,122 miles from Osh, in the south of the country, along the old Silk Road: the walnut forests of Arslanbob, the Naryn gorges, passes above 9,800 ft, the shores of Son Kul, the hidden lake of Kol-Suu and the stone caravanserai of Tash Rabat.

You ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 with an English-speaking tour leader, a mechanic and a support vehicle for your luggage, in a group of 10 motorcycles at most. From June to September, it is a true motorcycle road trip for experienced riders, across the Kyrgyz high country.

In the heart of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan borders China to the east, Uzbekistan to the west, Kazakhstan to the north and Tajikistan to the south. This landlocked country is mountainous over most of its territory, and its ranges split it into a north, around the capital Bishkek, and a south, around Osh, linked by high passes: ideal terrain for a Kyrgyzstan motorcycle tour. The Tian Shan rises to Peak Pobeda (24,406 ft), and the Pamir, in the south, to Lenin Peak (23,406 ft). In the southwest, the Fergana Valley, the lowest and most densely populated region, surrounds Osh. Lakes shine across this landscape: the vast Issyk Kul, slightly salty, at about 5,300 ft, and Son Kul, the largest freshwater lake in the country, at over 9,800 ft. Explore more of the region with our motorcycle tours in Asia.

Before you ride it, see the country through our scouting ride, now a film: Kyrgyzstan by motorcycle in Iron Horse Nomad Trails.

Between nomadic traditions and Soviet heritage, there is a lot to discover on Kyrgyzstan motorcycle tours. The country lies on one of the branches of the Silk Road, as the monuments of Uzgen and the stone caravanserai of Tash Rabat still show. Over the centuries, the Kyrgyz came under Mongol rule, then under the Kokand Khanate, before the Russian Empire annexed the region in the second half of the 19th century and the Soviet Union forced the nomads to settle. Mostly Muslim, the Kyrgyz have kept older beliefs rooted in shamanism and the worship of nature. Since independence in 1991, semi-nomadic herding has come back to life. As in Mongolia, the traditional home is the yurt, made of wood and felt, which families put up and take down as they move from one summer pasture to the next. A night in a yurt is all it takes to experience the legendary hospitality of the Kyrgyz people.

Summer is the season for Kyrgyzstan motorcycle tours: from June to September, the high passes are clear of snow and the dirt roads of the high plateaus are open. The climate is very continental and changes with altitude: in the Fergana Valley, around Osh, summer days can be very hot, while above about 8,200 ft you need warm layers, as nights by the lakes get close to freezing. September brings cool nights, sunny days and quieter roads. In spring, snow can still close the highest passes, and winter, under Siberian influence, is far too harsh for riding.

Kyrgyzstan by motorcycle: your questions

We run one tour in Kyrgyzstan: The Nomad Odyssey, 11 days including 9 riding days, on a loop from Osh. It crosses the country through its gorges, over passes above 9,800 ft and across high summer pastures, with nights in yurts beside mountain lakes. You ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. If nomadic life and wide open steppe are what draw you, also take a look at our Mongolia motorcycle tours, or at all our motorcycle tours in Asia.

The Nomad Odyssey costs $4,490 per rider and $3,290 per passenger, for 11 days. Your flight to Osh is extra, as is a $41 registration fee on your first tour with us. The motorcycle, gas, lodging, all meals on the riding days and the whole support team are included: the tour page spells out everything in detail.

Summer, from June to September, when the passes are clear of snow and the high mountain dirt roads can be ridden. Expect 77 to 95°F in the valleys, 50 to 64°F on the high plateaus and nights close to freezing by the lakes. September is cooler, but quieter. Winter is far too harsh for a motorcycle trip. Open dates are on the tour page, and our Kyrgyzstan weather guide has the details.

Our tour is rated Sustained and is meant for experienced riders who feel at ease on dirt. The stages are long, a good share of the route follows mountain dirt roads, and you spend several nights above 9,800 ft. Good physical fitness and regular riding are a must. Riding two-up is possible but demanding on this terrain: talk it through with your travel advisor before you book.

Bring your motorcycle license together with an International Driving Permit, which you can get from AAA. U.S. citizens currently need no visa for a short tourist stay like this tour; check the rule in force before you travel. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive. Details are in Preparing your trip to Kyrgyzstan, in our help center.

The tour starts and ends in Osh, the main city in the south of the country. You book your international flight to Osh airport, usually with a connection, for example via Istanbul or with a domestic flight from Bishkek, the capital. Our team meets you at the airport on the first day, takes you to the hotel and drives you back on the last day, according to your flight times.

On the road, the main risks are isolation and altitude: stages run far from hospitals, cell coverage comes and goes in the valleys and rapid rescue is rare. That is why every group rides with a motorcycle tour leader, a mechanic and a support vehicle, which can take an injured rider to the nearest medical center. Before you book, read the travel advisory and country information for Kyrgyzstan on the State Department website.

Not with us: in Kyrgyzstan we only run guided tours, never motorcycle rentals on their own. An English-speaking tour leader rides ahead, a mechanic looks after the bikes and a support vehicle follows with the luggage and spare parts, and we arrange the border-area permits and the yurt camps. Self-guided riding is something we offer only in the United States, from our base in South Dakota.
