On the agenda
A motorcycle training course allows you to discover, or revisit, the basics of off-road riding on the Royal Enfield Himalayan trail bike. This course will be useful for your daily road riding as well as preparing you for adventures that combine confidence and pleasure. Whether you have already travelled with us, are planning your next motorbike trip, or simply wish to join a fun weekend outing with friends, you are welcome at the Vintage Rides Academy for an off-road training course. You can also explore our other motorcycle trips in France.

Ready for more? Our two-day level 1 course adds a day of trail riding in the Beaujolais, and our three-day level 1 course adds two.

Our courses take place on private land and/or on small roads and rolling tracks. There is no support vehicle; in the event of an accident, participants and/or the guide will contact the public emergency services as soon as possible (fire brigade, ambulance). Unstable telephone networks may occasionally make it difficult to contact the emergency services. As with any adventure itinerary, the difficulty of the course depends on the weather conditions, both during and before the course.

One-day off-road training in France: your questions

Who is this course for?

For riders who are already confident on the road and want to discover off-road riding, or go back over the basics: try an adventure bike, build confidence before a tour, move up a level. It is not a road-riding refresher. The group is limited to 8 participants, led by an instructor certified by the French Motorcycling Federation, who teaches in English.

How does it differ from the 2-day and 3-day courses and Level 2?

This day takes place on private land: it is the simplest way to discover riding off tarmac. The 2-day course and ride and the 3-day course add rides on the small roads and tracks of the Beaujolais to put what you have learnt into practice. Level 2 is for riders who have already done a Level 1 course.

What does the day look like?

Meet at 8.30am, briefing with the instructor, then off to a private 4x4 ground: slaloms, side slopes, obstacles, slow and faster riding, standing up at higher speed, with exercises adapted to your level. Lunch in a local restaurant, then more practice until the end of the day, around 6pm.

Which motorcycle, and which licence do I need?

A recent Royal Enfield Himalayan 411, hired for the day. You need a full motorcycle licence (A or A2 category) and regular road riding. If your height makes you hesitate, talk to your travel advisor before booking.

Can I come with a pillion?

Yes, with two pillions at most per course. The pillion takes an active part: first riding behind the instructor to learn the right moves, then helping the rider correct theirs. The course costs £350 (€390) per rider and £170 (€190) per pillion.

How much does the course cost, and what is included?

£350 (€390) per rider and £170 (€190) per pillion. The price includes the motorcycle, fuel, third-party motorcycle insurance, the instructor and lunch. You pay for your riding gear, travel to the meeting point, a €600 deposit per motorcycle and, on your first booking with us, a registration fee of £31 (€35).

What riding gear should I bring?

Riding gear is not provided and it is compulsory: an approved full-face helmet, a jacket with back protection, reinforced gloves, high boots and trousers with knee protection. Also bring a rain suit and a water bottle or hydration pack; nets are provided to strap a backpack to the seat. The full list is in our help centre.

Where is the meeting point, and how do I get there?

At 8.30am outside Sain-Bel station (69210), west of Lyon, which you can reach by train from Lyon. From the UK, the nearest airport is Lyon Saint-Exupéry. Accommodation is not included: if you come from far away, plan a night nearby the evening before. There is no support vehicle: if needed, the instructor calls the emergency services.

When do the courses run?

From March to November, on fixed dates: the next dates and remaining places are shown on this page. How demanding the ground is depends on the weather in the days before, hence the rain suit in your bag.

How do I book?

Choose your date and book directly on this page, or call a travel advisor if you are unsure which format suits you. Places are limited to 8 participants per course.
