Starting from Thessaloniki, this bike tour in Albania and Northern Greece takes you on a journey to discover contrasting landscapes. Along winding roads, mountain passes, green valleys and peaceful lakes, the itinerary explores authentic regions that remain largely untouched by mass tourism. From the charming town of Kastoria on the shores of Lake Orestiada to the UNESCO-listed cities of Gjirokastër and Berat, you will discover the history and traditions of the Balkans. Riding through the wild Vjosa Valley and stopping by Lake Prespa add to this adventure, rich in panoramic views, cultural heritage and rewarding days on the road, before returning to Thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki → Lake Kastoria Stage 2/7 146 miles
Thessaloniki → Lake Kastoria
Your first day of riding takes you through the rolling landscapes of Greek Macedonia. Leaving the bustle of Thessaloniki behind, you gradually head towards the mountains of western Greece. Winding roads lead through forests, farming valleys and traditional villages before reaching Kastoria, a charming town built on a peninsula stretching into the calm waters of Lake Orestiada. In the late afternoon, enjoy a walk by the lake and soak up the authentic atmosphere of this region, still largely untouched by mass tourism.

Head towards Albania for a day full of contrasts. After leaving the shores of Lake Kastoria, cross the border and discover the mountainous landscapes of southern Albania. The roads wind through green valleys and isolated villages before reaching Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overlooked by its impressive fortress, the “Stone City” reveals cobbled streets, Ottoman houses and a timeless atmosphere. A fascinating immersion into Albanian history and culture.
Gjirokastër → Devoll Valley Stage 4/7 71 miles

This shorter stage gives you time to fully enjoy the landscapes of southern Albania. The route follows the Vjosa Valley, home to one of Europe’s last major wild rivers, offering beautiful views of mountains and fertile plains. You then reach Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” and also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dominated by its still-inhabited citadel, the city charms visitors with its distinctive architecture, steep lanes and historic Mangalem and Gorica districts.
Devoll Valley → Lake Prespa Stage 5/7 143 miles

Leave Berat’s historic scenery behind and ride east across Albania. The route passes through a succession of hills, rural valleys and authentic villages before reaching the unspoilt Prespa Lakes region. Located at the crossroads of Albania, Greece and North Macedonia, this vast natural area is an exceptional haven for wildlife and migratory birds. Settle into Lemos, a small Greek village on the lakeshore, where peace and tranquillity reign.

For your final day on the bike, ride through the mountainous landscapes of northern Greece. The roads alternate between forests, scenic mountain passes and traditional villages, offering superb views of the surrounding peaks. As you approach Thessaloniki, the atmosphere gradually becomes more Mediterranean. Return to Greece’s second-largest city in the late afternoon for a final dinner and a celebration of this adventure through the mountains, lakes and historic towns of the Balkans.
