A great introduction to touring as my first visit to India, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh via motorcycle.
More than satisfied yet wanting more, I'd been warned about getting hooked in by India, it's landscapes and people, I guess this trip succeeded in doing just that.
We were nearly stranded without any fuel at the end of the trip. I found it astounding we didn't have much more backup fuel than we did. Even if it meant having another backup vehicle, I would say it would be paramount in a region with such inconsistent access to fuel that we wouldn't have a large amount of reserves or caches around where we were traveling.
I prepared for the trip with several ADV tours and organized rallies, which helped clarify my expectations. The trip exceeded my expectations. Very intense and challenging experience.
Overall the trip was excellent. I joined because I wanted a proper adventure, I love seeing new places on the back of a motorbike, and I have wanted to visit the Himalayas for a long time. It delivered on all of these in a big way.
The bike reliability comments are main negative that I would highlight, but I do realise that these bikes take a hammering on these trips, and the mechanic did a good job. There were just times where it felt like the bikes were adding to the difficulties at some of the toughest moments, and I know others had bigger problems that I did (front suspension failure being one that springs to mind).
Cut the ride times down to 6 hrs a day on demanding tours so you can see more and rest up between days as most of us were in bed straight after dinner.
Firstly, a well organised trip and everything went to plan, so very well done to VR for that :-)
Luggage -
I read the travel guide from VR and purchased a duffle bag especially for the trip. I was annoyed then that 9 others in the group had luggage from hard case suitcases and hard cased carry on to wheeled duffle bags (both of which I already had). No penalty for them breaking the rules? Our soft bags mostly ended up under their hard luggage on the bus - not fair.
Language -
With the best will in the world, mixing 3 non French speaking with 9 French speaking just doesn't work. We just didn't know what was being said and it led to segmentation within the group. This was disappointing as it meant we struggled to make friends or casual conversation with most of the group.
Videos/photos -
I expected that VR would put a video together of our ride, I was disappointed when I realised any videos were up to us. I would have been prepared to pay for such a video/album. We didn't do enough group photos.
