The Wild Spirit of the Steppe

It is our shortest tour in Mongolia: 10 days with 8 days of riding, about 715 miles (1,150 km) on a loop from Ulaanbaatar, past Ögii Nuur lake, the Tsenkher hot springs, the Orkhon Valley, Karakorum and the Khögnö Khan dunes. In the Tracks of Genghis Khan lasts 14 days for 1,060 miles (1,700 km), as far as the White Lake, with two nights with a nomad family. The Frozen Ride is our winter tour, in January, on the frozen steppe.

The tour is rated Sustained: this raid is for experienced riders who are comfortable on tracks. About half of the route is on steppe tracks, with river crossings and small passes, and several days are ridden almost without tarmac. Stages are far from medical help and the phone network is patchy: the support vehicle follows the group.

From 31 to 162 miles (50 to 260 km) a day. The track days, at the heart of the tour, are the shortest (31 to 99 miles, 50 to 160 km) but the most physical; the last stage, 162 miles (260 km), is mostly on tarmac back to Ulaanbaatar.

A Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, built for tracks, maintained by our mechanic, who follows the group with the spare parts. If your height makes you hesitate, either way, talk to your travel advisor before booking.

Yes, if the rider is comfortable riding two-up on tracks: the track days are bumpy, for the rider and the pillion alike. The tour costs £3,090 (€3,490) per rider and £2,690 (€2,990) per pillion. Talk to your travel advisor before booking.

An English-speaking motorcycle tour leader, a mechanic and the driver of the off-road support vehicle, which carries your luggage and the spare parts; with more than 6 participants, a second vehicle follows the group. The group is limited to 10 motorcycles (12 participants with pillions).

£3,090 (€3,490) per rider and £2,690 (€2,990) per pillion. The price includes the motorcycle, fuel, the team, accommodation, full board from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 10 and transfers from Ulaanbaatar airport. You pay for your flights, any visa fees, drinks, tips and a €600 deposit per motorcycle.

The tour starts and ends in Ulaanbaatar, and you book your own flights. Our local guide meets you at the airport on day 1, which is free to explore the city. Day 10 is free too until your transfer to the airport, according to your flight times. To arrive earlier or stay on, ask your travel advisor about the options.

Departures run from May to September. Expect 15 to 25°C during the day; July and August are the wettest months, mostly with short showers late in the day. Evenings are cool: bring warm clothes and rain gear. Details are in our Mongolia weather guide.

In a hotel in Ulaanbaatar, then in yurt camps, two or three to a yurt, with washrooms in a separate yurt or building. In the Orkhon Valley, the night with a nomad family is spent in a shared yurt, for up to 4 or 5. Hot water is not guaranteed every evening and there is almost no internet. A single room is only possible in Ulaanbaatar.
