Arrival in Kochi
Discover the ultra-charming old town, formerly Fort Cochin, where we sleep, and its beautiful colonial past, between Dutch and Portuguese architecture, multi-century churches, and of course a vibrant and peaceful local life.
Kochi - Backwaters Stage 2/12 50 miles
Kochi - Backwaters
For this first day of this India motorcycle tour, we hit the road on the beautiful Malabar Coast, with its many beaches and strong Christian influence. Then small country roads lead us to the heart of the famous Keralan Backwaters.
Backwaters - Kumily Stage 3/12 93 miles
Backwaters - Kumily
En route to Kumily, and an enchanting passage through its spice gardens amidst mountainous landscapes. Then the first foothills of the Western Ghats. This long mountain range that runs along the entire southwest coast, one of the most beautiful protected areas in South India.
Kumily - Munnar Stage 4/12 78 miles
Kumily - Munnar
Winding road towards Munnar. We are in the highest mountains of South India, which culminate at 8858 feet altitude (Mount Anai Mudi, Kannan Devan Hills). Munnar is a trading center in the heart of some of the world's highest tea plantations.

You will delight in this day, all around Munnar, between abundant tea plantations and the most generous nature. And since we are on the edge of Eravikulam National Park, various suggestions for this stage will be offered to you, as the possibilities are numerous here.
Munnar - Kodaikanal Stage 6/12 106 miles
Munnar - Kodaikanal
We continue riding on many mountain roads, enjoying views of beautiful water reservoirs, and briefly descend into the warm Tamil plain to quickly reascend into the Kodaikanal region, into the welcome coolness of the Palani Hills.
Kodaikanal - Palakkad Stage 7/12 134 miles
Kodaikanal - Palakkad
The descent from the Palani Hills to the north offers superb viewpoints, especially over the Palar reservoir. The small holy town of Palani that welcomes us at the bottom is often an opportunity to enjoy this natural and frequent Hindu religious fervor. A succession of small roads, bits of sites, and lost villages then punctuates our progress to our destination.
Palakkad - Ooty Stage 8/12 99 miles
Palakkad - Ooty
Dense forests and tea plantations are once again on the agenda as we climb to Ooty. We make a crazy and steep ascent with 35 hairpin bends over a distance of 12 miles! Thanks to its tropical climate, this region has become an important agricultural area, specializing in the cultivation of coffee, tea, flowers, spices, and rare essences.
Ooty - Thrissur Stage 9/12 118 miles
Ooty - Thrissur
We feast on impeccable viewpoints on the long and slow descent through Mukurthi National Park, which brings us back to the plain definitively, in places as steep as the previous day's climb. Endless forests and plantations punctuate our journey. Then we descend into the plain to reach Cheruthuruthy (Thrissur) and enjoy the hotel, a haven of peace.
Thrissur - Vypin Island Stage 10/12 78 miles
Thrissur - Vypin Island
We head towards the coast and Guruvayur, a Hindu spiritual town where fetish shops and thousands of pilgrims gather daily. Lunch in the area, then we will follow the coastal road to Vypin Island, and its many beaches that are just beginning to welcome tourism.
Vypin Island - Kochi Stage 11/12 37 miles
Vypin Island - Kochi
Relaxing morning between beach and palm trees, where we can walk among the salt ponds. To conclude our trip, it's a festival of tiny roads through these other backwaters, miniature bridges, fishing or farming villages, rice paddies, and tropical crops until our final destination.

This is the end of your motorcycle tour in South India. Your room is reserved until 10 AM. Transfer to the airport or continuation of your stay.

  • A Royal Enfield motorcycle and spare parts.

  • Gasoline, parking, any tolls.

  • Third-party motorcycle insurance.

  • Mandatory insurance: insurance covering medical expenses on site. Repatriation assistance, which covers you in case of 2-wheel accidents (large displacement).

  • Legal insurance and cancellation insurance highly recommended.

  • The international driving permit.

This discovery tour suits couples and small groups: winding mountain roads in the Western Ghats, some heavily damaged by the monsoon, and about 10% gravel. India drives on the left. Passengers welcome.

Some stages are far from medical facilities: first aid and transport to the nearest medical center rely mainly on our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are rare, and phone coverage can be patchy. As on any adventure route, road conditions depend on the weather during and before the trip.
