Welcome to Nepal! You’ll be met at the airport according to your flight schedule and transferred to Patan. Authentic and full of life, this “city of beauty” is the ideal starting point for your motorcycle trip in Asia and a first day to acclimate.

On the first day of our motorcycle trip, we ride toward the Terai: a low-lying plain and the country’s breadbasket, with striking similarities to neighboring India. We stop on the edge of the country’s first national park, known for its successful Asian rhino conservation program. Two nights at an ecolodge.

A day entirely devoted to exploring Chitwan National Park; by boat in the morning and on a jeep safari in the afternoon. The star of this protected area is the rhinoceros, but it’s also common to see crocodiles and gharials, and with a little luck, a tiger, a leopard, or an Asian sloth bear.

We leave the Terai and head into the endless Himalayan hills, following the Kali Gandaki Corridor—a major river that flows down from the Upper Mustang region on the Tibetan Plateau. Our stop, the small town of Tansen, is not a tourist hub, so you’ll be able to experience typical rural-urban life in Nepal there.

Still following the Kali Gandaki River, we drive north toward the Greater Himalayas through the Himalayan foothills to reach the gateway to Lower Mustang: Tatopani, known in particular for its hot springs. From there, weather permitting, we can see the South Nilgiri nearby—standing at 6,800 meters—which serves as a bulwark for the Annapurna massif.

A short stage, allowing us to ease into Lower Mustang and fully enjoy the scenic views and photo stops that come one after another every 5 kilometers. Today’s landscape is truly spectacular; we’ve entered a whole new world. Everything is higher and grander, the vegetation is becoming alpine, and Hinduism is gradually giving way to Buddhism, as Tibet isn’t very far away.

Today, our loop through Lower Mustang—dominated by some of the world’s highest peaks—gives us a true sense of the splendor of this Himalayan valley. We climb to an altitude of 3,700 meters at Muktinath and its famous temple, then descend to spend the night in the Kali Gandaki Valley.

Let’s leave Lower Mustang behind and head for the famous hub for all the country’s tourist tribes, which welcomes trekkers, motorcyclists, paragliders, Indian vacationers, mountaineers, and backpackers... We’ll take the main road, which offers some great riding, then settle in for two nights again, giving you plenty of time to rest, buy souvenirs, or just relax by the shores of Lake Phewa with a glass of beer.

After breakfast, if the sky is clear, your tour leader will take you by motorcycle to the Pagoda of Peace, which offers the perfect view of the lake, the city, and the Great Himalayas in the background. After that, you’ll have the day free, and your guide will of course be happy to suggest a couple of things to do. Finally, we’ll all get together for a nice dinner.

In Nepal, there’s one road to avoid: the congested route from Pokhara to the capital. So that’s exactly what we’re doing, now that the country’s road network has improved significantly. This gives us a superb drive through the Himalayan foothills, dotted with terraced fields. We’ll head to the “postcard-perfect” village of Bandipur, another Newar masterpiece, for lunch. Then we’ll wrap up this leg of the trip at a modern and comfortable hotel.

We continue our journey through these peaceful and relaxed foothills, heading toward our final stop before returning to the capital; the residence where we’ll spend the night is another masterpiece of the Newars’ architectural heritage. Until then, we’ll still have to drive a short stretch (20 km) along the congested highway toward the capital—unless the group would prefer an alternative route to avoid it?

We hit the road again for this final day of motorcycling in Nepal. The road is narrow and scenic; we pass over a mountain pass and ride through Shivapuri National Park before returning to the capital in time for lunch. It’s time to say goodbye to our bikes. Free time and an evening in Kathmandu’s lively Thamel district.

  • Required insurance: insurance covering medical expenses while in the country. Repatriation assistance, which covers you in the event of accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles (high-displacement motorcycles).

  • Legal insurance and trip cancellation insurance are strongly recommended.

This trip is reserved for riders with a minimum level of experience. It includes a leg of the journey far from first-aid facilities, and the condition of the country’s roads sometimes requires a high level of motorcycle proficiency. Primary assistance in reaching the nearest medical facility is primarily provided by our support vehicle, as resources such as helicopters or ambulances are scarce. Limited telephone networks can make it difficult to contact emergency services. As with any mountain route, the quality of the roads and the difficulty of the route depend on weather conditions, both during and before the trip.
