This Argentina motorcycle tour will take you through the Andean high plateaus, between imposing volcanoes and deep canyons, and allow you to discover green oases, such as the vineyards of Cafayate. Explore the Valley of the Moon, Abra del Acay, the highest drivable pass in America, as well as the 14-color mountain. Don't miss an excursion to Chile to explore the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, with its lunar landscapes, active volcanoes, colorful lagoons, and fascinating archaeological sites.

Bienvenido a Argentina! Your South America motorcycle tour begins in Salta, at the foot of the majestic Andes mountain range. This historic city will be the starting point for an unforgettable adventure through breathtaking landscapes, between mountains, valleys, and deserts. Get ready to discover the soul of Argentina on your motorcycle.
Salta - Iruya Étape 2/13 180 miles including 34 miles of off-road
Salta - Iruya
First day of riding! We leave Salta via the magnificent winding road Nº9 heading North. Then we enter the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a mountain range classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, which presents a palette of colors from ocher to yellow, passing through purple, green, and red! We then take a 31-mile track with the Condor Pass at 13,123 feet to arrive in Iruya, an isolated village perched at 9,121 feet surrounded by cliffs.

We leave Iruya at sunrise and head towards Purmamarca, crossing the spectacular landscapes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The road winds its way through colourful mountains, arid valleys and Andean villages before reaching the famous, vividly coloured hills surrounding Purmamarca. A beautiful riding day combining dirt roads with some of the most iconic landscapes of northwestern Argentina.

We continue our adventure towards the high Andean plateaus, heading for Susques. The track gradually climbs to over 3,700 metres above sea level, crossing salt flats, desert landscapes and vast stretches of untouched wilderness. A spectacular stage taking us deep into the Argentine Puna before reaching the small village of Susques for the night.

Today we cross into Chile! The Paso de Jama border at 13,780 feet of altitude awaits us to cross the Andes mountain range from East to West! A totally desolate area where we will not encounter a single soul for more than 124 miles through the mountains. The arrival in Chile via the Atacama Desert is simply splendid! An immensity like few places in the world is offered to us. A view of more than 155 miles around… Welcome to the driest desert in the world!

San Pedro de Atacama - Rio Grande
San Pedro de Atacama is a village in the middle of the desert where everything is concentrated, so we will stay there for 3 nights. Today we ride through the Valley of the Moon, 9.3 miles of track on another planet in the middle of salt mountains! On the way to Rio Grande for lunch, the great canyons of the desert open up to us and their small winding roads are ideal for our motorcycles. At the end of the day, the sunset over the desert from the heights of the “Piedra del Coyote” is a unique moment…
San Pedro de Atacama - Geysers del Tatio Étape 7/13 112 miles including 112 miles of off-road

Departure at night this morning… We hit the track at 6 am… In the glow of the Himalayan headlight and the rising sun… A breathtaking 2-hour ride between the volcanoes to arrive in the cold at over 14,108 feet of altitude. At the end of the track, a field of boiling geysers! These 80 geysers at the foot of the Tatio volcano represent 8% of all geysers in the world… The 3rd largest field on Earth. A totally improbable place that we discover at dawn because it is the best time to appreciate its fumaroles. On the way back, we will get lost on a small track along the Bolivian border before descending to the Atacama Desert.
San Pedro - San Antonio de Los Cobres Étape 8/13 242 miles including 75 miles of off-road

The return to Argentina is via the same border because the other neighboring border has not reopened since Covid. We cross the Andes mountain range again at over 16,076 feet and reach the small mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres perched at 12,303 feet of altitude. ** Itinerary change possible depending on border opening/closing.

Magnificent day of endless turns! We go from 13,123 feet of altitude to 3,281 feet by descending the Quebrada del Toro then we climb back up to 12,139 feet in a few hours via the Cuesta del Obispo… The majestic mountains and today's asphalted roads are even more so!
Rest day in Cachi Étape 10/13
Rest day in Cachi
Rest day where we discover the charming Andean village of Cachi, picturesque and authentic, overlooking the valley thanks to its 8,202 feet of altitude. It's pleasant to stroll in the shade on the central square... A visit to the museum offers an immersion into pre-Inca, Inca, and Spanish eras. Local vineyards are also open for visits. Free lunch for everyone today.
Cachi - Cafayate Étape 11/13 124 miles including 99 miles of off-road

Back on Route 40! From track to track, we arrive at the hidden lagoon of Brealito located at 8,858 feet of altitude. A gem of the Northwest, a lunar landscape of rock formations sculpted by earthquakes, erosion, and time. These rock spires pointing towards the sky open onto an exceptional track, a real treat for us and our motorcycles.
Cafayate - Salta Étape 12/13 124 miles
Cafayate - Salta
Last day of riding, we resume our route to Cafayate and cross the Quebrada de Las Conchas, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a hundred miles through an immense canyon formed by the oceans millions of years ago! You will discover impressive colors and rock formations, from ocher to golden, passing through green, red, and yellow! Arrival in Salta. Overnight at the hotel.

This raid is reserved for experienced riders. It includes long stages at high altitude (passes > 14,764 feet) far from first aid. Primary assistance to reach the nearest medical center is mainly provided by our support vehicle, as means such as helicopters or ambulances are very rare. Limited telephone networks and the prohibition of satellite phones can make contact with emergency services difficult. As with any mountain itinerary, the quality of the roads and the difficulty of the route depend on the weather conditions during and before the trip.
