A self-guided motorcycle tour is for riders who want to explore at their own pace, without travelling in a group or following a guide. It is a true self-guided motorcycle road trip: the motorcycle is ready, the hotels are booked and a detailed roadbook with GPS tracks guides you all the way, while you shape each day as you wish, setting off early, lingering in a small town or stopping for a breathtaking viewpoint.
Our self-guided tours currently run in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the USA, from Rapid City: a long weekend or 9 days on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450.
This format is designed for independent travellers who want to ride on their own, with the backing of a professional organisation.
The idea is simple: we craft the motorcycle road trip. Your motorcycle is ready, your hotels are booked, and a detailed roadbook with GPS tracks and points of interest guides you along the entire route.
You pick up your bike, ready to ride at your own pace, no guide required: an early start for the sunrise and the cooler air, a long lunch in a small Western town, an impromptu detour to an unexpected viewpoint. On self-guided motorbike holidays, you decide how each day unfolds.
Before departure, you receive everything you need to prepare. On the road, phone assistance is available 24/7. Without a guide or support vehicle, Freedom tours are for riders ready to embrace the spirit of an independent motorcycle trip. Whether you have already ridden with us or a motorcycle trip is just starting to take shape in your mind, this could be your next adventure.
Our self-guided motorbike tours are a different way to experience adventure: the framework of a fully organised motorcycle trip, while you set your own pace.
We handle the essentials, the motorcycle, the accommodation and the route planning, so you can focus on the ride and the scenery.
Our turnkey self-guided motorcycle tours include:
The Vintage Rides roadbook holds GPS tracks you read on your phone: the recommended roads, suggested stops and points of interest along the way and, on Best of the Black Hills, an off-road variant for riders who want to leave the tarmac. Each day becomes an invitation to explore: you choose when to leave, how long to ride and where to stop.
This format is for riders who love to chart their own course, backed by a team that specialises in motorcycle tours.
Before you leave, the Vintage Rides team helps you prepare: your travel advisor answers your questions about the route, riding conditions and the sights not to miss. In Rapid City, you collect a ready-to-ride motorcycle at our garage, and you can leave your suitcase there while you ride.
Once on the road, you are free… but never alone. If you break down, roadside assistance steps in, and our phone assistance answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This mix of independence and behind-the-scenes support makes all the difference: you explore at your own pace, solo or with a few of your favourite riding partners, backed by motorcycle travel specialists.
The roads may be the same on a guided tour and an independent motorcycle trip, but the spirit is different. Here, there is no tour leader, no support vehicle and no mechanic following the group. Your luggage travels in the panniers, and the adventure is lived as close to the road as possible.
A self-guided motorcycle road trip suits resourceful riders who enjoy planning their day, stopping where they want, eating where they like and improvising a detour when the scenery calls for it. Without the logistics of a group, the trip gains flexibility.
Motorcycle trips with hotels, GPS routes and support included are often a more affordable option, while keeping the essentials: a quality itinerary, carefully selected accommodation and a dedicated team behind the scenes.
In short, a self-guided motorcycle tour with Vintage Rides combines preparation, freedom and adventure: a way to discover new roads while feeling that every mile is yours.
It is a motorbike holiday with no guide and no group: you ride at your own pace, solo, two-up or with friends, but never without a safety net. We provide the motorcycle, book a hotel at each stop, give you a roadbook app and stay reachable 24/7. It suits independent riders, happy to follow a route on their own. Freedom is a format, not a difficulty rating: each tour shows its own level on its page.
For a long weekend, Black Hills Blast loops around the Black Hills in 3 days and about 311 miles (500 km), all on tarmac, with several departures from May to early September. With 9 days to spare, Best of the Black Hills adds the Badlands and Devils Tower, in Wyoming, over about 770 miles (1,240 km), with an optional off-road roadbook; its season starts in late April. Both leave from Rapid City, South Dakota.
On our guided tours, a tour leader rides ahead and, on most of them, a mechanic and a support vehicle follow the group with the luggage. Self-guided, nobody rides in front of you: your kit fits in the panniers, you set the start time and the stops, and help comes remotely. If you would rather be led, see our Motorcycle Rambles, built around roads and encounters, or our Adventure Tours, where gravel tracks take a bigger share.
Yes. Both tours can be ridden two-up on the same bike: a pillion pays £290 (€340) on the Black Hills Blast and £890 (€990) on Best of the Black Hills. With friends, each rider takes a motorcycle and you ride together, with no group to join and no strangers to wait for. Travelling solo works just as well.
Prices per rider range from £790 (€850) for the 3 days of the Black Hills Blast to £2,590 (€2,890) for 9 days on Best of the Black Hills. They cover the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, your hotel nights, the roadbook and assistance. Add your flights to Rapid City, meals and fuel, plus a £31 (€35) registration fee if it is your first trip with Vintage Rides.
The roadbook app on your phone gives the GPS tracks for each day, the alternative routes and the stops worth making; if anything goes wrong, assistance answers day and night. If you would rather plot your own route, without booked hotels, our Rapid City base also rents its motorcycles by the day on vintageridesusa.com. In Rapid City, a helmet is provided on request, pillion included.
