See all reviewsRwanda is small, safe and astonishingly green: a country of hills covered in tea and terraced crops, between the volcanoes of the Virunga, Lake Kivu and the savannah of the east. Our Rwanda motorcycle tour, The Land of a Thousand Hills, is a 9-day loop from Kigali with 7 riding days and about 621 miles (1,000 km) on a Royal Enfield Classic 350.
You ride with an English-speaking guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle for your luggage, in a group of 10 motorcycles at most. Park entrance fees and a 4×4 safari in Akagera National Park are included. From £3,590 (€3,990) per rider, with departures in January, February, June and July.
From Kigali, the road climbs north through the hills to Lake Burera, facing the Virunga volcanoes. The next morning, those who have booked the gorilla trek set off into the forest with a local guide, while the others ride to the market of Ruhengeri, before the whole group heads down to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu.
The route then follows the Congo-Nile ridge above the lake to the bay of Kibuye, crosses tea and coffee plantations and the montane forest of Nyungwe, close to 2,500 metres, and turns east to the old royal palace of Nyanza. The last days lead to Akagera National Park, where you leave the motorcycles for an afternoon safari, and back to Kigali along the hilltop tracks and Lake Muhazi.
The tour is rated Intermediate. We ride mainly on small secondary roads and on good, rolling tracks: about a quarter of the distance is off tarmac, with some days, such as Kitabi to Bugesera, mostly on tracks. Days of 5 to 6 hours of riding follow one another, so you need good physical fitness. A pillion is welcome.
Rwanda has two dry seasons: a short one from December to February and a long one from June to September. Our departures follow them, in January, February, June and July, when the tracks are dry and the views over the volcanoes clearest. Close to the equator but at altitude, the climate stays mild all year, with cool mornings in the hills.
Meeting the mountain gorillas is an optional extra on day 2, to book in advance: read our story The gorillas of Rwanda, a major encounter. Want to ride more of the continent? Cross Maasai country in Tanzania, discover Madagascar or see all our motorcycle tours in Africa.
