We absolutely loved our trip through Kerala and Tamil Nadu on the Spices Route. With all of our luggage strapped to our bikes, a brilliant tour leader in Dinesh and an excellent RE trained mechanic in Atul, completed with myself and my wife, our little party of four bikes could not have had a better rambling adventure. Some sections of gnarly off road, sweeping switchbacks climbing from searing 100oF heat on the plains up to the balmy coolness of the Nilgiri mountains. Riding through the green velvety perfection of tea plantations, whilst stopping for fresh coconut water at the little roadsides - delightful. Cannot praise our guide and mechanic enough. We were immersed into the countryside, seeing very few westerners and getting what we hope was a truly authentic experience. Discussion led us to think on improvements, one of which could be to do the ride in the reverse direction. We undertook a nearly thousand mile journey clockwise. Towards the end we did some really long days on the plains in the heat and maybe getting them out of the way at the start, so that you end in the back waters with a last short day might be a lovely way to end it. It would not affect the experience of the riding. Just a thought. Regardless we had a fabulous time.

Several years ago, I saw a report on a bikers' trip to the Himalayas that blew my mind. I told myself that this was what I wanted to do. I'm of a certain age now, and with my daughter in tow, I opted for something more affordable. In spite of everything, I had a great time with the group we formed, and my memories of it will last forever.

The scenery, the atmosphere, most of the hotels, the guidebook was top-notch, but some of the roads... aie aie. The roads in India are a change of scenery, but what I didn't like was that I had the impression that the route was forcing us into the residential areas where the houses were, although the roads in these places are very narrow and I find them more dangerous than a main road with more traffic. And I had the impression of going round in circles "just" to see the interior of the towns when a better route was available, that's a personal feeling. Maybe a bit too much track/off-road, not too pleasant with this kind of bike for my taste. I spent more time paying attention to where I was going to ride and not getting a sore bottom than enjoying the scenery. For example, I'd have preferred to discover the interior of towns/villages by walking, which also helps to stretch the legs after a few hours on the bike :) To sum up, it was a real change of scenery, and all in all I'm satisfied with the trip, although I'd like to make a few changes to the route!
