Arrival in Delhi
Namaste and welcome to India! You will be met at the airport by our local representative, who will hand over your schedule and flight details for the following day, followed by a transfer to your hotel. For this first step, you are free to explore the city as you wish. We recommend visiting the Jama Masjid mosque and the picturesque Chandni Chowk bazaar. (Note: Your tour guide will meet you directly in Sandrup Jongkhar, Bhutan.)
Delhi - Sandrup Jonghkar Stage 2/12 62 miles
Delhi - Sandrup Jonghkar
This morning we fly to Guwahati in Assam, a small state in eastern India. From there, transfer by vehicle to the Bhutanese border. After some administrative formalities, we arrive in Sandrup Jonghkar, the starting point of our motorcycle ride in the Himalayan kingdom.

It's the grand departure for our motorcycle trip to Bhutan! We ride from ridge to ridge, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Bamboo forests and stilt houses surround us. Then we reach the gentle Trashigang where we spend the night.
Trashigang - Mongar Stage 4/12 59 miles

Heading to Mongar! Along the way, we make a detour to Drametse Dzong, the most important monastery in eastern Bhutan. Our route then winds through dense blue pine forests where rhododendrons, ferns, and wild orchids share the undergrowth.
Mongar - Bumthang Stage 5/12 118 miles

We set off again through the thick jungle, then leave behind this semi-tropical climate zone bordered by bamboo and lianas for a vast plateau. We begin the ascent of Bhutan's highest motorable pass, the Thrumsing La (12467 feet).
Bumthang - Gangtey Stage 6/12 93 miles

We resume our route west through the wide, open, and cultivated Chumé Valley, dotted with temples. A forest of oaks, rhododendrons, and magnolias surrounds us as an introduction to the ascent of Pele La at 10827 feet.
Gangtey - Punakha Stage 7/12 50 miles
Gangtey - Punakha
The road winds into a narrow valley where dwellings are scarce, then we ascend the black mountains. The descent leads us to the hamlet of Chuzomsa. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until 1955, and is now renowned for its majestic dzong in an enchanting setting.
Punakha - Thimphu Stage 8/12 43 miles

We continue towards Thimphu via the Dochu La at over 10171 feet. We quickly reach the capital and take advantage of the afternoon to visit the Memorial Chorten, or the Folk Heritage Museum which offers a fascinating insight into the way of life and traditions of Bhutan.
Timphu - Paro Stage 9/12 115 miles
Timphu - Paro
To reach the capital, Paro, we head to Dodji Dzong, from where we can admire Mount Jhomolhari, culminating at 23996 feet, a natural border with Tibet. A very beautiful road leads us to Haa before crossing the Chele La at 12467 feet.
Paro Stage 10/12 12 miles
Paro
We can reach the Tiger’s Nest temple, clinging to the cliff at an altitude of 10236 feet. Not far from the monastery, but 2625 feet above the bottom of the precipice, lies the "Tiger's Den," a true hermitage, where a monk isolated himself for several years. Then free time in Paro.

Transfer to Paro International Airport. Return flight to Delhi. Overnight at the hotel.
Delhi Stage 12/12
Delhi
This is the end of your road trip to Bhutan. Transfer to Delhi International Airport according to your flight schedule.

This discovery tour has no technical off-road sections: the roads are winding, about 80% in good condition and 20% under construction. You ride over passes up to about 12,500 ft, sometimes along steep drop-offs, and fog and rain are possible even in spring and fall. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 has a seat height of 32.5 to 33.3 in (lowered seat 31.7 to 32.5 in). The tour starts and ends in Delhi, so you need a double-entry Indian visa. Passengers welcome.

Some stages are far from medical facilities: first aid and transport to the nearest medical center rely mainly on our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are rare, and phone coverage can be patchy. As on any adventure route, road conditions depend on the weather during and before the trip.
