Bienvenido a Argentina! This is where your South America motorcycle tour begins. At the foot of the Andes mountain range, Salta will be the starting point of our motorcycle adventure.
Salta - Iruya Stage 2/13 180 miles including 34 miles off-road

First day riding our Royal Enfield Himalayan 450s. We leave Salta via a magnificent winding road heading North. Already, Argentina reveals one of its most beautiful sites: the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a multicolored mountain range classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The final stretch is on a lost track deep in the mountains… Welcome to the end of the world! Welcome to Iruya!

By getting up at dawn, we might have the chance to spot condors rising from their nests above the canyon. Today's stage allows us to ride towards the Bolivian border to reach the "Valle de la Luna". From Cusi Cusi, we hit Route 40 for a few good tens of miles of track. We organize a magnificent picnic at an altitude of 13780 feet with a view of a secret lagoon… Then we will spend the night in the charming village of Humahuaca with its cobbled streets and colonial houses.

We set off for the “mirador del Hornocal” and after an hour on the track, we arrive at the viewpoint at an altitude of 14272 feet which offers us a breathtaking view! Called by the locals the “mountain of 14 colors,” we are in the front row of this panorama where the sun plays with the colors.

Magnificent day of endless turns! We go from an altitude of 13123 feet to 3281 feet descending the Quebrada del Toro then climb back up to 12139 feet in a few hours via the Cuesta del Obispo… The majestic mountains and asphalted roads are even more so today!
Cachi Stage 8/13

A day of rest where we discover the charming Andean village of Cachi, picturesque and authentic, overlooking the valley thanks to its 8202 feet altitude. It's pleasant to stroll in the shade on the central square... A visit to the museum offers an immersion into pre-Inca, Inca, and Spanish eras. Local vineyards are also open for visits. Lunch is free for everyone today.
Cachi - Cafayate Stage 9/13 124 miles including 99 miles off-road

Back on Route 40! From track to track, we reach the hidden lagoon of Brealito located at an altitude of 8858 feet. A gem of the Northwest, a lunar landscape of rock formations sculpted by earthquakes, erosion, and time. These rock spires pointing towards the sky open onto an exceptional track, a real treat for us and our motorcycles.
Cafayate - Andalgalá Stage 10/13 143 miles including 68 miles off-road

We leave Route 40 to visit the ruins of Quilmes, this sacred 30-hectare site where one can observe the remains of a forgotten civilization. We pass by the Capillitas mine, where deposits of a pink mineral, a semi-precious stone that is the sacred symbol of local artisans, are found. This is followed by 28 miles of winding turns on a wild track that snakes up the mountain to reach Andalgala.

Andalgalá - Tafí del valle
A long and beautiful climb on the Chilca track, clinging to the cliffside, offers us an impressive view of the impenetrable Catamarca desert. Crossing the Aconquija National Park via a few miles of winding tracks, a totally different landscape opens up to us: here we are in the green mountains of Tafi Del Valle. A motorcycle day with a thousand hairpin turns!

Last day of riding, we resume our route to Cafayate and cross the Quebrada de Las Conchas, a UNESCO World Heritage site, about a hundred miles through an immense canyon formed by the oceans millions of years ago.

  • Mandatory insurance: insurance covering medical expenses on site. Repatriation assistance, which covers you in case of 2-wheel accidents (large displacement). 

  • Legal insurance and cancellation insurance highly recommended.

  • The international driving permit.

This adventure tour is for experienced riders: about 1,490 miles over 10 riding days, passes above 14,700 ft and about 40% tracks, mostly easy but with lots of washboard and sandy sections. Tracks are easier in the southern spring and can be harder in March and April (river crossings, rutted tracks). Passengers only if you both have off-road experience; the passenger can switch to the support vehicle at any time. An International Driving Permit is required.

Some stages are far from medical facilities: first aid and transport to the nearest medical center rely mainly on our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are rare, and phone coverage can be patchy. As on any adventure route, road conditions depend on the weather during and before the trip.
