Bhutan motorcycle tours

Bhutan, the last Himalayan kingdom, is one of the rare countries you can cross from end to end on a motorcycle: mountain passes strung with prayer flags, fortress-monasteries called dzongs, pine forests and rice terraces, and very little traffic. Our Bhutan motorcycle tour rides it from east to west on a Royal Enfield, with an English-speaking guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle.

Bhutan, Sacred Land is a 12-day tour from Delhi, with the domestic flights and the Bhutan visa included. From $6,390.

From Delhi, you fly to Guwahati in northeast India and ride to the border town of Samdrup Jongkhar, the gateway to eastern Bhutan. The road then climbs through the east, rarely visited, to Trashigang and Mongar, crosses the high passes to the valleys of Bumthang, the spiritual heart of the kingdom, and continues to the glacial valley of Gangtey and to Punakha and its riverside dzong.

The last days take you to Thimphu, the capital, and to Paro, home to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest monastery, before you fly back to Delhi from Paro: about 670 miles of mountain roads in all.

The tour includes the flights from Delhi to Guwahati and from Paro to Delhi, the Bhutan visa, the Royal Enfield and fuel, accommodation, full board, the guide, the mechanic and the support vehicle. You only need to book your international flight to Delhi.

This is a relaxed tour on paved mountain roads, some of them narrow and winding, at a pace that leaves time for monasteries, markets and villages. You need a motorcycle license and regular riding practice. Passengers are welcome: “We took this trip together, driver and passenger, and it was a great experience,” say Pierre and Maria.

Spring and fall are the best seasons, with clear skies over the Himalaya and mild days in the valleys. Our departures run in April, then in October and November.

Bhutan motorcycle tours: your questions

Bhutan, Sacred Land costs from $6,390 per rider and $5,690 per passenger for 12 days, including the domestic flights from and to Delhi and the Bhutan visa. The international flight to Delhi is not included.

Yes, and it is included: we handle the Bhutan visa for you. You also need an Indian visa, as the tour starts and ends in Delhi; our team tells you exactly which documents to prepare when you book.

In Delhi. We fly together to Guwahati, in northeast India, ride into Bhutan through the eastern border at Samdrup Jongkhar, and fly back to Delhi from Paro at the end of the tour.
