Closed to foreigners until 1992, the former kingdom of Mustang has kept a strong Tibetan Buddhist identity and one of the most striking landscapes in the Himalayas: canyons, eroded cliffs and villages clinging to the mountain, dominated by snow-capped peaks. Along the Kali Gandaki, one of the deepest gorges in the world, you ride between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, both rising above 26,000 feet, and visit the monasteries of Marpha and Lo Manthang.

In the Kathmandu valley, don’t miss the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the great stupa of Boudhanath, the temple of Swayambhunath and the old royal cities of Patan and Bhaktapur, all listed as UNESCO World Heritage. In the lowlands, Chitwan National Park is home to one-horned rhinos, elephants and the Bengal tiger.
