Laos motorcycle tours

Laos is one of the last countries in Southeast Asia spared by mass tourism: misty mountains, jungle, rice terraces, bamboo stilt houses and the slow rhythm of the Mekong. Our Laos motorcycle tour starts in Chiang Mai, Thailand, crosses the Mekong into northern Laos and rides mountain roads to Luang Prabang, the former royal capital.

Thailand & Laos: Along the Mekong is a 12-day guided tour on a Royal Enfield, with an English-speaking guide and a mechanic. From $4,290.

From Chiang Mai, you ride to Chiang Khong and cross the Mekong into Laos. The road climbs to Luang Namtha, then winds down to Nong Khiaw, a village set between limestone cliffs on the Nam Ou river, before reaching Luang Prabang for a rest day. The return runs through Sayaboury and Pakbeng, on the banks of the Mekong, back to Thailand and Chiang Mai: 12 days and about 1,090 miles in all.

  • Luang Prabang: a UNESCO World Heritage town of golden temples and colonial houses, and the morning alms procession of the monks.
  • The Mekong: the lifeline of Laos, flowing some 3,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea.
  • The Elephant Conservation Center: in Sayaboury, you stay at a center that protects Asian elephants. Laos, once the land of a million elephants, now has only a few hundred left in the wild.

The best season is the dry season, from late October to March: less humidity, cooler temperatures, and cold mornings in the northern mountains. Our departures run during that season. From May to October, the monsoon brings heavy rain and heat.

Laos motorcycle tours: your questions

Thailand & Laos: Along the Mekong costs from $4,290 per rider and $3,490 per passenger, for 12 days. International flights are not included.

In Chiang Mai, Thailand, where our Royal Enfields are based. We meet you at Chiang Mai airport, ride to Chiang Khong and cross the Mekong into Laos. We handle the border crossing for the motorcycles.

Yes, US citizens need a visa for Laos, which can be obtained at the border or online before you travel. When you book, our team tells you exactly which documents to prepare.

During the dry season, from late October to March. Our departures run during that season. The monsoon runs from May to October.

A Royal Enfield from our fleet in Chiang Mai: a Classic 350 or a Himalayan 450, depending on the departure. Your travel advisor tells you which model.

A Vintage Rides tour leader, an English-speaking guide and a Royal Enfield mechanic. A support vehicle carries your luggage and follows the group from four participants upward.
