Come explore southern Tunisia and its landscapes, from the Mediterranean island of Djerba to the edge of the Sahara, on a Royal Enfield Himalayan. You ride through the ocher mountains of the Dahar and their Berber citadel-villages, the ksour of Tataouine, the dunes of Ksar Ghilane on the fringe of the Grand Erg Oriental, the date palm groves of Douz along the Chott El Jerid salt lake, and the troglodyte dwellings of Matmata. A short, varied Tunisia motorcycle tour, rich in history and encounters.

Djerba Island Stage 1/7 25 minutes transfer

Welcome to Djerba, for this Africa motorcycle tour! You are welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel located in Houmt Souk, the island's historic city. Once settled in our fondouk, an ancestral building where merchants and travelers lodged, you are free to wander through the historic alleys of the souk, with its colorful stalls of fabrics, objects, and spices. Stroll through the unique architectural atmosphere of its whitewashed buildings and the ubiquitous blooming bougainvillea. Enjoy the island's legendary nonchalance by having a coffee or a freshly squeezed orange juice in the shade of the tamarind trees. Overnight in a heritage and standard hotel.
Djerba - Tataouine Stage 2/7 146 miles

Early departure to reach the motorcycles about 9 miles from Houmt Souk. After leaving the island and reaching the mainland via the only road link (the ancient Roman Road), we quickly head towards the mountainous region of Dahar. We access its arid reliefs and valleys, where every drop of water counts, in the late morning. Lunch in the shade of palm trees, in a mountain oasis. In the second part, we enter the land of Ksour and fortified villages, built in the past by semi-nomadic populations to protect and store harvests and other precious goods. We reach our guesthouse north of Tataouine at the end of the day. Overnight in a heritage and standard hotel.
Tataouine - Ksar Ghilane Stage 3/7 121 miles
Tataouine - Ksar Ghilane
We head towards the southernmost point of the trip, crossing the city of Tataouine, whose name was popularized by the Star Wars saga, to see one of the most interesting Ksour, in Ouled Soltane. We continue all morning in the reliefs of Dahar, up to the citadel-village of Chenini, for lunch. In the afternoon, we ride towards the Tunisian Sahara and its well-known oasis, Ksar Ghilane. Turns become rare, the first dune fields appear, and we enter a new world. Possibility to swim in the oasis spring, or go quad biking in the dunes. Overnight in a standard hotel, in a Bedouin-style tent.
Ksar Ghilane - Douz Stage 4/7 99 miles
Ksar Ghilane - Douz
To get from the oasis to Douz, you have to follow the edge of the desert, along a road where sandbanks regularly appear. Or camel herds. Lunch in downtown Douz, then in the afternoon, we do a loop through the date palm groves, the region's main economic resource, to ride along the southern edge of Chott El Jerid, a vast depression of an invisible salt lake. The shade and calm of the palm groves are a blessing in these lands of harsh life. Overnight in a standard hotel. 99 miles + 47 miles (optional).
Douz - Matmata Stage 5/7 155 miles
Douz - Matmata
After riding through other palm grove islets on the eastern fringe of Chott El Jerid, we cross a vast desert area before rejoining the northern part of the Dahar range after lunch. We once again enter the reliefs via Ancient Zraoua, another fascinating citadel-village. And finally, we approach Matmata, known for its troglodyte dwellings dug into the ground, and its slight resemblance to Cappadocia. We ride through this stunning, time-frozen landscape during the second part of the day before reaching our troglodyte guesthouse. Overnight in a charming standard hotel.
Matmata - Djerba Stage 6/7 115 miles

We fully enjoy this morning entirely dedicated to the landscapes of northern Dahar, where crops and greenery gradually reappear. Traditional lunch on a mountainside, within an ancient Berber village built of dry stone, before descending into the plain towards the coast. We board the ferry to return to Djerba Island. We drop off our motorcycles in the late afternoon and return to Houmt Souk. Dinner at the fondouk to debrief together the best moments of this motorcycle ride. Overnight in a standard hotel.

End of your Tunisian adventure. It's time to do your last shopping in Houmt Souk. Shuttle to Djerba International Airport.

This tour follows small roads and about 110 miles of dirt tracks (about 16% of the distance, but a quarter to a third of the riding time), including some sandy sections at the edge of the Sahara: you need to be comfortable on a motorcycle and ready to learn to ride on sand. Days are hot, mornings and evenings are cool, and rain gear is useful. Accommodation is simple and unusual, including a troglodyte guesthouse and one night with shared bathrooms.

Some stages are far from medical facilities: first assistance is provided by our support vehicle, as helicopters and ambulances are rare, and the phone network can be unstable. As on any adventure route, the difficulty depends on the weather, during and before the tour.
