See all reviewsMadagascar’s RN7 is one of the great road trips of Africa: from the rice terraces and volcanoes of the highlands to the rainforest of Ranomafana, the sandstone canyons of Isalo and the white-sand beaches of the Mozambique Channel. Our Madagascar motorcycle tour rides it from end to end on a Royal Enfield, with an English-speaking guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle, then flies you back to the capital.
The Red Lands of Madagascar is an 11-day tour, 8 days on the motorcycle, from $4,690.
From Antananarivo, you head west to the volcanic lakes of Ampefy, then south on winding roads lined with terraced rice fields to Antsirabe, the town of the rickshaws. The RN7 then enters Betsileo country, famous for its wood carvers, and reaches Ranomafana, where you swap the motorcycle for a walk through a rainforest home to lemurs.
Via Fianarantsoa and Ambalavao, the road crosses into the dry lands of the south, past the ring-tailed lemurs of Anja, to Isalo National Park and the sapphire-mining towns around it. The last big day runs down to Mangily, on the Mozambique Channel, and a domestic flight takes you back to Antananarivo: about 840 miles in all.
This tour is for experienced riders: long days, some rough stretches, and remote areas far from medical facilities, where our support vehicle provides first assistance. The pace leaves time for village stops, markets and the national parks.
“Coming from the U.S., Madagascar was an unforgettable adventure from start to finish.” King, June 2026
The dry season, from April to November, is the time to ride, with sunny days and cooler nights in the highlands. The rainy season, from December to March, brings the risk of cyclones and turns some roads to mud. Our departures run from March to October.
