The Southern Hills are the Black Hills' greatest hits, packed into one unforgettable day. Where the Northern Hills offer drama and history, and the Badlands deliver wide-open spaces, the Southern Hills give you everything at once: engineering marvels, wildlife, granite spires, and a lake that looks like it was placed there on purpose.
This is the most dramatic of the three circuits and the most technically rewarding. Iron Mountain Road alone is worth the rental: 17 miles of spectacular scenery that loops back over itself, three tunnels that each perfectly frame Mount Rushmore in the distance, and switchbacks through ponderosa pine that no road planner today would ever consider building. Then Custer State Park opens up with the Wildlife Loop, where herds of bison graze along the roadside, pronghorn antelope roam the grasslands, and friendly burros wander up expecting a pat... and sometimes a snack! The Wildlife Loop offers 18 miles of some of the best wildlife viewing in the American West.
Needles Highway is the grand finale: 14 miles of towering granite spires, single-lane tunnels carved through solid rock, and Sylvan Lake at the northern end is the icing on the cake. Leave Custer by mid-afternoon to experience the Needles in the best light. Plan for a full day, and don't rush it.
Easy additions to this tour include Mount Rushmore, the Shrine of Democracy; the Crazy Horse Memorial, an enormous mountain carving in progress honoring the great Lakota leader; the Indian Museum of North America; and the classic Black Hills towns of Hill City and Keystone.

Leave Rapid City heading south, and you'll reach Custer in about 45 minutes, the natural starting point for this circuit. Iron Mountain Road (US-16A) begins almost immediately: pigtail bridges, three tunnels that perfectly frame Mount Rushmore, and tight switchbacks through ponderosa pine forest. It's 17 miles of road that riders remember for years.
Next comes Custer State Park. The Wildlife Loop puts you in the middle of one of the largest free-roaming bison herds in North America.. Pronghorn antelope, burros, and prairie dogs are all part of the experience.
Needles Highway (SD-87) closes out the day with towering granite formations rising from the forest, the Needle's Eye Tunnel - just 8 feet 9 inches wide - and Sylvan Lake tucked among the rocks at the northern end.
The Southern Hills circuit is the most concentrated stretch of exceptional riding in the Black Hills, all of it comfortably experienced in a single full day.

No. This page is a motorcycle rental, not a guided tour: you collect a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 in Rapid City and ride Iron Mountain Road, Custer State Park and the Needles Highway by yourself or with friends, choosing every stop. Want your nights booked and a roadbook for each day instead? Our self-guided Black Hills Blast (3 days) and Best of the Black Hills (9 days) take care of that.
Three of the most famous roads in South Dakota, back to back. Iron Mountain Road (US-16A) packs 17 miles of pigtail bridges and switchbacks, with three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore. The Wildlife Loop crosses Custer State Park for 18 miles among bison, pronghorn and burros. The Needles Highway (SD-87) closes the day with 14 miles of granite spires, the Needle’s Eye tunnel, just 8 feet 9 inches wide, and Sylvan Lake.
Plan a full day, roughly 6 to 8 hours with stops. Custer, where the circuit really begins, is about 45 minutes south of Rapid City, so collect the bike early. Keep the Needles Highway for last: leaving Custer by mid-afternoon puts you among the spires in the best light. Between slow mountain roads, wildlife on the tarmac and single-lane tunnels, this is not a loop to rush.
Yes, both sit along the way. Mount Rushmore is a short detour from Keystone, at the northern end of Iron Mountain Road; allow about an hour on site. The Crazy Horse Memorial, the mountain carving honoring the Lakota leader, stands between Custer and Hill City, with the Indian Museum of North America on the same grounds. Add one and start early; add both and think about a second rental day.
Choose the Southern Hills for the landmark roads of the region in one day: wildlife, tunnels and granite spires, with the most demanding riding of the three. The Northern Hills is shorter and gentler, with Spearfish Canyon and Deadwood, and can be done in half a day. The Badlands heads east to open prairie and eroded buttes for the longest, emptiest day. All three leave from the same Rapid City garage on the same bike.
Manageable for a confident rider with some mountain road experience. The Wildlife Loop is easy, on wide tarmac. Iron Mountain Road asks for attention on its pigtail bridges and tight switchbacks. The Needles Highway is the most technical: hairpins, blind corners and single-lane tunnels where you stop and wait for oncoming traffic. Bison have right of way in the park, so slow down and never ride between two of them. Newer riders should start with the Northern Hills.
$130 per bike per day, plus 11.9% South Dakota sales tax, so $145.47 in all. Sturgis Rally days, August 6 to 15, 2027, are $200 with a 3-day minimum. Your Custer State Park pass, which covers the Wildlife Loop and the Needles Highway, comes with the rental, along with insurance, a full-face helmet and side cases. Budget for fuel, meals and Mount Rushmore parking. Rentals carry no registration fee.
Yes, one passenger per bike, at the same daily rate. Every road is paved, but the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road mean slow hairpins and stops at tunnel entrances, so you should be at ease handling a loaded bike at walking pace. Ask for your passenger’s helmet when you book; they bring their own jacket, gloves and boots.
We rent year-round, but May through September is the reliable window for this loop. The Needles Highway closes when snow sets in and reopens in spring, on dates that change every year, and winter weather can affect Iron Mountain Road too: check conditions before booking off-season dates. Rally week in early August brings heavy traffic to the whole region, so ride the Needles at first light. Route tips on our Needles Highway guide.
