Motorcycle rental in Rapid City SD: explore the Badlands on a Royal Enfield

SD-44 heads east from Rapid City through the White River Valley as the prairie opens up. Then the Badlands Loop Road (SD-240) runs 39 miles through the national park, with 14 named overlooks: Yellow Mounds, the Pinnacles Overlook and short walks such as the Medicine Root Trail. Wall Drug, the famous roadside store, makes the classic lunch stop before the ride back.

A full day. By distance this is the longest of our three Black Hills circuits, and the overlooks and short hikes slow you down, as they should. Book the first pickup slot, at 8 AM, so you reach the park in the soft morning light and are heading home before the late afternoon heat builds up on the formations.

The Badlands Loop Road itself is paved. Sage Creek Rim Road is the optional gravel side: 25 miles of backcountry through bison country, with no services along the way. Ride it in dry weather only, as the clay turns slippery after rain, and keep 100 yards from the bison. Leaving the roads is not allowed anywhere in the national park.

Choose the Badlands for wide open space and the strangest scenery in South Dakota: striped clay, spires and grassland instead of pine forest. The Northern Hills, with Spearfish Canyon and Deadwood, is the shortest and the one that fits in half a day. The Southern Hills links Custer State Park, Iron Mountain Road and the Needles Highway. With three days, you can ride all of them.

Not technically: the main route is paved, with long straights and gentle curves. What makes the day demanding is its length, the summer heat and the prairie wind, alone on the bike, in a park where cell coverage is weak in places. Sage Creek Rim Road is easy gravel at a steady pace, but washboard and loose patches call for some experience off pavement.

$130 per motorcycle per day, plus South Dakota tax of 11.9%, or $15.47. Rally week, August 6 to 15, 2027, is billed at $200 a day with a minimum of 3 days. You get the Himalayan 450, insurance with a $1,000 deductible, side cases, a phone/GPS mount, a tool kit and round-the-clock support. Fuel and the Badlands National Park entrance fee, paid at the gate, are extra. No registration fee applies to rentals.

Yes, with one passenger per bike, and the price stays per motorcycle. The paved byway is comfortable two-up, but over a long, hot day your passenger will want water and sun cover at every stop, and we would ride Sage Creek Rim Road solo. Ask for a helmet in their size when you book; they bring their own jacket, gloves and boots.

We rent all year. May, June and September are the best months: mild temperatures and softer light. In July and August, ride early and late, since midday heat on the formations is fierce. In August the loop is a quiet escape from the Sturgis Rally crowds; book 3 to 6 months ahead for those dates (Rally rentals). Out of season, check the weather with us first.

Carry at least 2 liters of water, as there are no services inside the park between the Pinnacles and Cactus Flat, plus sunscreen and a windproof layer. Fill the tank in Wall.
