South Africa motorcycle tours

Our South Africa motorcycle tour is a loop from Cape Town through the Western Cape, one of the finest riding regions in the world: coastal roads above False Bay, the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas, the gravel roads and mountain passes of the Karoo, the legendary Route 62, the vineyards of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, and the Cape of Good Hope to finish.

Adventure in South Africa is a 10-day guided tour on a Royal Enfield, with an English-speaking guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle. From $4,690.

From Cape Town, you ride along False Bay to Hermanus, then take gravel roads to Cape Agulhas, where the Atlantic meets the Indian Ocean. The route then climbs into the Klein Karoo on the most technical track of the tour, crosses the Swartberg range and the Meiringspoort gorge towards the Great Karoo, and follows Route 62 through Calitzdorp and the Seweweekspoort pass to the Victorian village of Matjiesfontein.

Back south, you cross Anysberg and Montagu into the wine country, ride the Franschhoek Pass to Stellenbosch, and finish on the Cape Peninsula, via Simon’s Town and the Cape of Good Hope: 10 days, 8 of them on the motorcycle, and about 990 miles, including some 390 miles of gravel.

This is an adventure tour: long days, and about 40 percent of the route on gravel roads and tracks, some of them remote. You need a motorcycle license, regular riding practice and some experience off the pavement. The support vehicle carries your luggage and provides first assistance.

The seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere. Our departures run in February, in the dry, warm Cape summer, and from September to November, in spring, when whales gather along the coast near Hermanus.

South Africa motorcycle tours: your questions

Adventure in South Africa costs from $4,690 per rider for 10 days, with full board, accommodation, the motorcycle, fuel and the support team included. International flights are not included.

It is a loop from Cape Town through the Western Cape: Hermanus, Cape Agulhas, the Klein and Great Karoo, Route 62, Matjiesfontein, Montagu, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and the Cape of Good Hope. It does not include a safari.

Some. About 390 of the 990 miles are on gravel roads and tracks, some of them technical, and the days are long. You need a motorcycle license, regular riding practice and some experience off the pavement.

Our departures run in February, during the dry Cape summer, and from September to November, in spring.

A Royal Enfield, prepared by our mechanic, who rides with the group together with the support vehicle.

The tour starts and ends in Cape Town, where we meet you at the airport. You book your own flight; from the US you usually connect once, or fly nonstop to Johannesburg and on to Cape Town. US citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days.
