When to go to Italy?

You can go on a motorcycle trip in Italy throughout the year depending on the region visited. A mix of continental climate in the north and Mediterranean climate in the south, the best seasons for motorcycle travel in Italy are spring and autumn. Tourist regions are calmer than in mid-summer, cities are more dynamic, and temperatures are less scorching. In Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, winters are harsh with frequent snowfall. In summer, the same region is affected by many thunderstorms. Favor spring and autumn to discover the great Italian lakes. In central Italy, the Mediterranean climate is tempered by altitude, with cold winters and summers where temperatures are nuanced by winds. On the Mediterranean coast, winters are mild and summers are hot and dry, with increasingly warm temperatures as you approach the far South. If you travel to southern Italy by motorcycle during the summer, to find some coolness, favor the reliefs near plateaus and mountains.

Geography of Italy

The "Italian boot" bathed by the sea and connected to the European continent by the Alps is a territory with a unique geography. Located in Southern Europe, Italy borders France, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Austria. It is a country of mountains; the Alps form a large arc in the north of the country with peaks over 13123 feet high, including the famous Mont Blanc and Mont Rose. It is in this region that the great lakes are found: Lake Garda, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore. During a motorcycle trip in Italy, you explore the Apennine massif, the country's backbone extending from the Po plain to Calabria. Near Naples, you find Vesuvius, which rises to about 3937 feet in altitude. Bordered by the Tyrrhenian, Ionian, and Adriatic seas, Italy has nearly 4660 miles of coastline. Why not set out to conquer the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia, ideal to discover during a motorcycle trip in Italy. Don't miss the big cities of Milan, Rome, Bologna, Florence, Turin, Venice, Siena, or Naples.

History and Culture in Italy

During your motorcycle trip in Italy, you will have the chance to experience the history of a unique country in Europe. From Antiquity, Italy distinguished itself with the Roman Republic and the founding of Rome in the 8th century BC. At the end of the 5th century, the fall of the Western Roman Empire led to deep divisions in the country. For several centuries, the country was composed of different states attracting the covetousness of neighboring countries, including France, Spain, and Austria until the 19th century. In the 17th century, Savoy distinguished itself as the most powerful state in northern Italy. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that Italy began to unify thanks to the kings of Piedmont and Sardinia. Rome became the capital in 1871. In 1922, Italy plunged into dictatorship with Mussolini's fascists in power. Italy entered World War II alongside Germany against France and England. It was not until 1946 that the Republic of Italy was proclaimed. In 1957, the country signed the Treaty of Rome, thus sealing the European Economic Community with 5 other countries! After a few tumultuous years of terrorism with the Red Brigades, Italy regained its political stability at the turn of the 19th century.
