Although I have been riding motorcycles for many years, this was the first time I had taken an organised trip with my wife. It was great to be able to ride on our own bikes, and with our Cardo communication system we could chat along the way — it worked very well. Personally, I would have preferred a few more off-road sections during the trip, but having reviewed the route I accept that this was probably not feasible, and we may have got out of our depth quite quickly given the terrain. Although Gilles explained the riding formation (i.e. staggered/checker), I think at times people forgot about it. Perhaps in future, the final briefing or joining instructions could include a short reminder explaining this formation and why it is important — especially in busy towns or areas where the group needs to stay tight to safely clear traffic lights and hazards. On the open road, however, I see no issue riding in single file and using the full road width to position correctly for the bends. While there is always room for minor improvements, I thought the brand, the product and the delivery of the tour were excellent and fully met my expectations. I have already recommended VR to several friends. We will certainly be booking another trip with VR in the near future.

Our experience with vintage rides was not as expected. The bikes are capable of maintaining a decent average speed, however, the ride was incredibly slow and although we knew we would be riding 350cc motorcycles which are not that powerful, we never realised that we would be running at an average of 30mph or we would not have chosen this trip. For the money we paid, we expected a much higher standard of cafe stops, the house visit was very unhygienic with flies and cats. The people made the trip memorable for us, the scenery was incredible and we fully enjoyed the adventure despite the negative aspects but the motorbiking side of things is not our style of riding whatsoever, far too rigid in formation and too slow so unfortunately we would not consider another vintage rides tour but we have been on other motorcycle tours before and will again. Changes really need to be made to make this trip as expected, unfortunately for us, it just didn’t meet up with our expectations. We had a great laugh and a great trip as a group and without this spirit of friendship I think we may not have enjoyed our trip.
