Rwanda motorcycle tours

Mountains, rainforest, lakes and savanna: Rwanda, a small country in East Africa’s Great Lakes region, packs a remarkable range of landscapes into a few days of riding. Hills covered in tea and terraced fields, the Virunga volcanoes, the shores of Lake Kivu, the montane forest of Nyungwe and the wildlife of Akagera National Park: Rwanda motorcycle tours open up an authentic, welcoming country without long transfers.

Our tour, The Land of a Thousand Hills, is a 9-day loop from Kigali with 7 riding days on a Royal Enfield Classic 350, on small paved roads through the hills and good dirt tracks. You ride with an English-speaking motorcycle guide, a mechanic and a support vehicle for your luggage, in a group of 10 motorcycles at most. Park entrance fees and a 4×4 safari in Akagera are included; meeting the mountain gorillas is an optional extra. From $4,790 per rider, with tours running in January, February, June and July. Ready for one of the most unforgettable motorcycle trips of your life?

When’s the best time to go? Close to the equator, Rwanda alternates dry and rainy seasons. The best time for Rwanda motorcycle tours is the dry season: the short one in January and February, and the long one from June through September. Our departures follow this calendar. The rains fall mainly from March to May and toward the end of the year: they make the red dirt tracks slippery and hide the volcanoes in cloud, and a shower remains possible in any season.

Altitude keeps the climate mild year-round: Kigali sits at about 4,900 feet, and its temperatures barely change from month to month. Days are warm, but evenings stay cool in the hills, near the volcanoes and in Nyungwe Forest, at close to 8,200 feet: pack a warm layer and rain gear.

Rwanda is located in East Africa’s Great Lakes region. It borders Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, across Lake Kivu. On your motorcycle adventure, you start from Kigali, the capital, spread over hills about 4,900 feet (1,500 meters) above sea level. Before riding into the countryside, the Kigali Genocide Memorial helps you understand the country’s recent history.

The terrain is mountainous almost everywhere. In the northwest, the Virunga range peaks at Mount Karisimbi, 14,787 feet (4,507 meters), the highest point in Rwanda, and shelters Volcanoes National Park, home of the mountain gorillas. In the southwest, Nyungwe Forest, one of the largest montane forests in Africa, is home to chimpanzees and many other primates. In the east, lower and drier, Akagera National Park mixes savanna, lakes and wetlands, with lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, hippos and several hundred bird species. In between, the slopes are covered with tea and coffee plantations. Few Africa motorcycle tours pack so much variety into a single week.

During your Rwanda motorcycle tours, you ride through the history of an ancient kingdom. In Nyanza, the former royal palace recalls the monarchy that ruled these hills until the 20th century. Under German rule, then Belgian rule after World War I, the country gained independence in 1962. Colonial rule hardened the distinction between Hutu and Tutsi, to the point of writing it on identity cards.

From April to July 1994, the genocide against the Tutsi killed at least 800,000 people in about a hundred days. Since then, the country has rebuilt itself and looks to the future: clean cities, a ban on plastic bags and, on the last Saturday of each month, umuganda, a morning of community work. Many travelers also come in the footsteps of Dian Fossey, to meet the mountain gorillas she studied in the Virunga.

Rwanda motorcycle tours: your questions

We run one tour in Rwanda: The Land of a Thousand Hills, a 9-day Motorcycle Ramble with 7 riding days, starting and finishing in Kigali. In one week it links the country’s great landscapes: the Virunga volcanoes, the shores of Lake Kivu, Nyungwe Forest, the old royal palace of Nyanza and the Akagera savanna. For more dirt riding, see Tanzania; for an 11-day adventure tour, Madagascar.

$4,790 per rider and $4,190 per passenger for The Land of a Thousand Hills, 9 days on the ground. The price includes your Royal Enfield Classic 350 and its gas, the motorcycle guide, the support team, lodging, meals on riding days, park entrance fees and a 4×4 safari in Akagera National Park. On top, budget for your flights, drinks, the gorilla trek if it appeals to you and, on your first tour with us, a $41 registration fee.

During the dry seasons: January and February, then June through September. Our departures follow this calendar. The rains fall mainly from March to May and toward the end of the year, and make the red dirt tracks slippery; a shower remains possible in any season. Close to the equator but at altitude, Rwanda stays mild year-round: warm days, cool evenings in the hills and the forest. Dates are on the tour page.

An Intermediate level: you should ride regularly and be comfortable spending several days in a row in the saddle. The route mixes small paved roads winding endlessly through the hills with good dirt tracks, a few of them more technical. It is a great first taste of off-road riding in Africa, and passengers are welcome. For an easier first tour, Morocco has tours rated Accessible.

U.S. citizens need a visa, available on arrival at Kigali airport for about $50 and 30 days, according to our help center. Your passport should be valid at least six months after entry. Bring your U.S. motorcycle license; we recommend an International Driving Permit, issued by AAA. Rules can change: check the State Department page on Rwanda before you go. Other nationalities should check before booking. Details: Preparing your trip to Rwanda.

Fly to Kigali International Airport, usually with one or two connections, on flights you book yourself. Our team meets you there on day 1 and drives you to your hotel in the city; the tour loops back to Kigali and the airport transfer is included on the last day. There is no domestic flight: the capital, at about 4,900 feet, is both the start and the finish.

Yes, on a guided tour. Rwanda is known for being calm, clean and well organized, with little crime. The real risk is the road: curves through the hills, motorcycle taxis, pedestrians and heavily loaded bicycles, unlit roads outside Kigali. The guide sets the pace and the support vehicle follows the group. Before you go, check the U.S. Department of State page on Rwanda, including its latest alerts, and enroll in STEP, the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

Yes, as a paid option. The mountain gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park, at the foot of the Virunga range, and you meet them on foot with a local guide, in a small group. Permits are issued in limited numbers each day: if the trek appeals to you, book it when you sign up. Those who skip it keep riding, and the whole group meets up again afterwards.
